Default Cam Gears

Can someone tell me the purpose of cam gears? I know you can adjust them but what do you adjust? The timing? Isnt that the same thing as advancing your timing? Maybe someone can clear this up for me.

Default Re: Cam Gears (fe519)

you are advancing or retarding your cam timing...not ignition timing.

it has an effect similar to ignition timing, but you are controlling when air and fuel enters and leaves (intake and exhaust) the combustion chamber. NOT when your spark fires.

If I said this wrong someone correct me please.
