Power steering removal...
If heard that removing power steering can remove as much as 150 pounds ( sounds like a lot to me) but im not too sure. Its a 89 hatch dx at the moment. I tried searching and couldn't find anything on this. Is 150 pounds accurate? Is it a difficult process to do? thx.
what the hell? 150 pounds? Wouldn't you just remove the pulleys and pump and the fluid and plug the holes? i would venture to say thats no more than 50 pounds, and thats a liberal estimate...Maybe if you removed the steering column too, but i do enjoy steering.
Its not quite as easy as it may sound the rear engine cross member is different. There is a cooler tube that runs in front of the Radiator, the power steering bracket needs to come off, the High Pressure Hose and the two smaller return hoses along with the reservoir and its associated mounting gromments. But yes I would say it would be between 50-100 pounds of weight removed maybe more.
Remove the rack and plumbing as a unit (up to pump hi pressue and to the reservior/cooler low pressure) from below.
I have a spare manual rackand cross member if you need it and I would be interested in the power rack, and all the hardware, if it needs a home.

removing the power steering pump and hoses on a power steering rack =
You'll be getting the ratio of a power rack which is better than a manual rack, with the feel of manual. Set it up with one of the looped hoses with a "T" fitting and bring that up to a used clutch resevoir. This will let the rack "breathe", so you're not building up pressure everytime you steer, which is why power steering is so hard without the belt on or the car off!
