Default Tranny fill plug stripped

Hey guys like the title says, I need a different way to fill it. I found a forum that says you could fill through the backup switch on top of the tranny. Is this true?

That's true.
You can also use the VSS hole.
With the fill bolt out, you also know when you have added enough oil. Right when it starts to leak out is when it's full.

You can check if you have enough oil in by removing a driveshaft. When it starts to leak out, then it is full.

Couldnt I just fill the backup switch until it starts coming out? I dont want to have to remove my driveshaft again.

you may have made your situation worse by not using the right tool in the first place.

but ive salvaged a fill plug by wedging my wrench on enough to torque it off. the frame wall is close enough you can wedge something in between to force the wrench over the "stripped" head.

itll be easier than dicking with your VSS and not knowing how much fluid you need to put in.

I was thinking of using a flarenut wrench, 17mm, would that be as good as a 6pt wrench? or is the flarenut wrench what your talking about? Thanks again for the replies.

I'm talking about a regular 6 sided closed box end wrench. 12 pt is not enough. Flarenut may be better but not ultimately the best since its open ended.

It would be impossible to strip a bolt with a 6pt wrench. You'd torque the head off before achieving a stripped head. I've done that before too....

Ok cause I have a 6 sided closed box end wrench and it's torqued so much that it indeed did strip. It feels like 100 ft lbs lol, this is crazy!

Backup switch is too high so you would overfill.

I completely drained my transmission when I installed it. I just measured factory spec for it and refilled it through the VSS since I had to swap my VSS. Not hard.

But I would say removing the fill plug and doing it the right way is a good place to start. Welding a wrench to it isn't a bad idea either. Just toss them both and get a new plug.

So 4drEF, if I do the driveshaft thing, could I fill through the backup switch and have someone watching the driveshaft till fluid starts coming out and call it good? Would this work? Thanks again guys..

I've done it on my own before. Just pour nearly the recommended amount and then pour the rest slowly.

Ok thanks man, I think I'll be ok, I seen a pic and the fill plug is straight across from the drive shaft. Same level. BTW, I still have a check engine light, but my car runs fine now, no more surging. Still no codes, I guess I will have to get a sticker to cover it up lol. Thanks again.

Would it be easier to fill into the driveshaft?

I filled up my tranny through the backup switch and waited for it to come out of the axles, success. Tranny shifts perfect.

Maybe not impossible, just unlikely. Here is a picture of the sockets I use, and would recommend to anyone. They are MAC 6 points with teeth on 3 walls. Snap-on might have something similar now, I know they have it on their open ended wrenches. MAC also has 6 point toothed gear wrenches which are more awesome

you cant fit a ratchet and socket on the fill bolt with the frame wall being so close.

just buy a 17mm 6pt box end wrench.

Yeah I have them in wrenches also, but I can't find a picture of the wrenches.
