Default weird idle. how to change O2 sensor

my car idesl weird, goes from 700rpm up to 2200rpm more or less at times. It could be the o2 sensor from the CEL. How do I fix this exactly? I got a muffler ticket and want to fix it before i have it inspected. any help is helpful

  1. Unplug O2 from wiring harness
  2. Unbolt O2 from header
  3. Install new O2, being careful not to touch surfaces as much as possible (use a clean rag to handle it)
  4. Clip back into harness

Is the ECU throwing a code (Check Engine Light)? If not then it is most likely not the O2 sensor. Could be one of two things 1) Vacuum leak - spray carb cleaner in and around the intake if it stablizes then its a leak. Find it and fix it. 2) Idle set too high - disconnect the idle control (ECAV) and with the engine warmed up set the idle to ~750 RPM using the idle adjustment screw above and slightly behind the throttle body.
