d series auto trans to auto trans swap
I've read every thread i can find of d series auto transmissions and have not been able to find a definite answer. I'm having trans problems and I have an 95 civic lx sedan with an s24a. I have knee pain which is why I chose an auto after driving manual for 5 years. From what i understand the a24a s24a and m24a are all interchangeable, supposedly only gear ratios are slightly different? My best option for a swap is a jdm m24a, if i switch the s24a out for an m24a will i need to also swap the ecu so that i don't get a trans error code/ problems?? I know autos aren't messed with much, any help will be appreciated, thanks
From what I understand as long as the transmission is from a 92-95 series car (USA/CAD at least) no ECU swap is required. It was from 96 on up that the ECU was also mated to the transmission. Mind you this is just what I've heard.
Also I am not sure if the 92-95 directly relates to Japan too.

the cvt is a POS! where do you come up with the "more reliable" info? 92-95 ex trans has different ratios, anything 92-95 dx/lx and you're good to go. 96-00 will not work at all. i have personally ran a p06 on an ex a/t, it shifts a bit rough but no cel's.
Stay within generation, and within engine trim for an automatic. It's that simple. "Engine trim" means the engine in the car, not necessarily the trim of the car itself. For example, a 6G LX and DX both have the same engine, and their automatic transmissions are cross-compatible.
Whoever says a CVT is more reliable and easier to build needs to go get an MRI at their nearest hospital, quickly.

i appreciate all your comments, I am a little lost by optimisticway's post, idk if i quite understand the point of that direction, I gave book value for the car, and it is really clean, motor runs great, only 170k, so I'm pretty much stuck with the car. there's just a differential problem within the trans from what i understand, problem very seldom and only when turning.
eghatch9295, can you tell me which trans came in which? I'm having trouble understanding which is which, did 92-95 dx/lx only run s24a's, 92-95 ex ran m24a's there's also an a24a??? are you saying the p06 as in ecu? that's an ecu for an lx/dx? also concerned with fuel economy? more info would be greatly appreciated

yes, the p06 is the ecu. any automatic trans from 92-95 civic/del sol non EX trim level will work perfectly. check out car-part.com, it is a junkyard search engine. they list mileage and condition, and usually give a warranty. i do see them on craigslist commonly for $100 or less, but anything from CL is a gamble.
Do yourself a favor, and forget his post. It was so completely off-base that a gracious moderator deleted it.
I'm not 100% read-up on automatic transmission codes, but I do know that the 92-95 DX and LX automatic transmissions are identical. An EX or Si transmission, however, will cause issues, and should throw a CEL and/or D4 code.

/\ will not throw any codes, just shifts slightly rougher than it should. 96-00 have cel problems when swapping trans from non vtec to vtec. they had "smarter" tcm's.
Have you experienced that shifting EG? Could you describe it in better detail?
also, if it isn't too much to ask, what are the differences in identifying the non-vtec & vtec USDM autos?

sure. ever have a transmission seem to shift rough into gear? they do that to a degree. OP already nailed the ID down, check out the stamp.
I think it could be an explanation for why my trans shifts so damn badly almost all the time. I'ma look into where those stamps are and see if my transmission is proper or not
is was told by an experienced tech that the 92-95 auto trans are supposed to be pretty strong and non-problematic especially compared to 99-04 trans, but he said they always have shifted pretty shitty. Mine shifts rough at low rpm, but if you get in it full throttle it shifts really smooth, would have thought it would be backwards. eghatch, did you notice a difference in fuel economy with that trans? so to be clear the m24a did come in ex models??
Its best to use what is within your model, which is 92-95. I don't think it was ecu specific as it was for 96-00 models though. Me saying that does not mean you should jump on a 96-00.
Please don't necro bump old threads and instead create your own with your car details etc.
