Sounds like you need a new cap if it's broken. If the cap is broken more sound than usual will come from it. The fuel gauge is designed to stay in the same spot and will ever so slightly drop as you use more gas.

It's not the cap just bought new one. The bolts the hold the cap to the dizzy housing are broken. Okay but the pointer on it is suppose to drop when car is off?

And the noise is coming directly from the distributor

I've never seen a new cap that didn't come with the three mounting bolts. No, the pointer doesn't move when the car is off. Perhaps something is loose inside the distributor or perhaps the bearing got damaged somehow. If the car is running bad and you had to jam the distributor into the head it may be 180 degrees off now if you didn't mark the shaft when you put it all back together.

Haha it came with bolts but the ones that were already in the old cap are broken off in the housing. In all my cars all gauges drop down when car shuts off. Distributor locations was marked and it's not 180 off i marked shaft to the teeth didnt need to jam it in. Car runs okay but it makes a distinct ticking noise

So is the cap properly mounted to the distributor? If not, it could be vibrating causing the noise...or it could be off center enough that the rotor is actually making contact with one of the contacts inside the cap. Remove the cap and make sure there is nothing extra inside and look for signs of rubbing or contact.

...especially if all of the cap bolts are not in use, ie., the heads on some are broken off. You'll need to remove the broken off bolts before doing anything else, as you won't be able to get the dist. cap properly seated without all of the bolts properly tightened.

Okay... The cap has nothing to do with the clicking noise. It's coming directly from the distributor housing. I'm jus wondering is there a chance i put it back together wrong? Or would it even work if that was the case. Or is this noise meaning a bad dizzy. Cause. Did notice the bearing would spin for a while
