Default 09 civic si cel cause of gas?

I juat got a 09 si Saturday and I pul regular has (87) in it I was unaware I was supposed to use premium only. Well long story short I was driving for about 3 n ahalf hrs and my cel came on also I was told that I had some blks smoke come from my exhaust when I accelerated. When I finally got back to my town I put premium in the tank since I was 2 bars from empty.

Could the regular gas cause my cel? Also will it go away after a bit of using premium gas?

OP can you get your car scanned to find out what the CEL code is? That would be the first thing to check. If you are having black smoke usually it's cause you are running rich meaning more fuel compared to the amouht of air coming in.

If you run a lower octane usually a cel wouldn't show up as it the ECU will make the correct changes to run on 87 octane. This doesn't mean it's ok to do it but it's capable of making the change in case of negligence!

Still telling him to check the lid didn't even answer any of his questions period...

OP get your car scanned for that CEL code. The only thing that can go wrong with running 87 octane is the knock sensor has failed. This will only happen if you would always use 87 octane as the knock sensor would wear out from trying to stop all those knocks!
