Default exhaust flames

ok, I get in my car start driving around for a little bit. I say I havn't gotten on it in a while so I do and as soon as I get in vtec my car hesitatews like crazy. Scared the **** out of me. So I do it again and it does ther same. I give the car a little break and try again (no hesitation) and when I shift from 1st to 2nd I hear the car kind of pop. And look in my rear view and see the whole road light up from flames out the exhaust. I was dumbfounded because its never done that. Then while still on it I shift into 3rd and it does it again. What causes that and should I be worried.

Mine did that when I ran the test pipe, and the scortched all the exhaust valves, make sure you timing isn't advanced to much

is it possible that your ignition has problems? If your plugs don't fire (causing hesitation) then the unburned fuel will exit into your exhaust. But normally it wont ignite unless you have some kind timing problem. Check your plugs to see if they are fouled or running extra rich.

running too much static ignition advance will make it shoot flames when you let off to shift. retard the timing some or run a higher grade gas

Default back from the dead

yeah, i'm bringing this back to life. i'm having the same problem now, but no vtec. i took the distributor off when i took the transmission out and now i'm trying to get the timing correct. i've been messing around with it trying to get it back to what it seems like it normally was, but now it's making a big *** fire ball between shifts or when i rev alot. i tried retarding the timing but then it just bogs at 5k rpms unlike it used to. btw, i tried using the timing gun, but the markings aren't showing up on my clutchmaster flywheel.

yeah, i have the fatf flaming exhaust without meaning to.

could i play around with the cam gears to get it to go away?

suggestions?

hey del. did you get the timing close to what it was stock?. (Referring to last thread that i tried helping you on and said timing).

i'm just going to point out real fast. there are two ways that fireballs are shot out the exhaust.

one is running way too rich where the unburnt fuel ignites while in the exhaust and you get a nice "poof". out the back.

The second is when you run too lean to where you start a slight detonation and well. you can figure that one out.

keep us posted as to how the car is running. by the way. what was the timing at after you put your distributor back on? when i told you to check it.

the markings on the clutchmaster flywheel aren't showing up with the timing light. i'll try again during the day, but i'm not sure if it's going to show up. it's close to the point where it was originally.

fuel filter is being replaced.

turns out i had to do a full advance on the distributor just to get it close to spec. gonna play around with it some to see if i can reclaim the proper range.
