Default 89 civic- do i just need this bushing replaced?

This part( in the pic) is the outer tie rod? And the circled part, im guessing is the bushing thats ripped, is it called outer tie rod bushing? Also the little boot is ripped, on both driver and passenger side. Im not too familiar with tie rods, from what i read is replacing those will help with my probelm; i have alot of shaking in steering wheel when braking at high speeds( above 60), but also need an alignment because my tires only wear from the inside. But before i take it to a shop i wanted to replace those things, otherwise they probably wont do an alignment.

Yes that is the outer tie rod. Most people just replace the tie rod, rather than putting a new boot on. If you're going in for an alignment, you might also want to check your steering rack end bushing. Search the forum for more on that.

high speed braking could be from warped rotors.

you should check to see if those tie rods need to be placed. with the wheel on, push and pull it, with your hand on 3 o'clock, and 9 o'clock. if you hear a clunking sound, then it might be your tie rods. but even then you would have to find out if it's the inner or outer tie rod.

just because the boot is ripped doesn't mean it's bad.

Tie rods are cheap, just replace it.

if you replace it, look for the moog problem solver ones, it gives you the ability to grease the rod end. They last a lot longer then the regular ones. Normally if the boot is ripped, grit has already gotten into the rod end and has been wearing on it, the other advantage of the problem solver ones, is you force grease through the end and flush out dirt

There is a clunking sound when i move it, i figured because that bushing is ripped, but i guess it would be best to replace the tie rods.
Does any one know a specific place that sells complete inner and outter tie rods for a good price?
And as for the steering rack bushing, should i opt for an oem bushing from the dealer?

*Also* my car originally came with power steering, but i disconnected it a while back, just took the pulley/pump part out. Can doing that cause certain damage to steering components?

The rubber boots are available separately they are used on a wide variety of Hondas and they are less expensive than an aftermarket tie rod end. If you have OEM tie rod ends I would only replace them if they are in fact bad. The rack bushing is very inexpensive ($10) once again I would go with OEM. The clunking is likely coming from the steering rack. If you have other transportation options available I would suggest pulling the steering rack then you can easily check each component for any play and replace only the parts that need replacing. I only needed the tie rod end boots, the rack guide and the dust boots at the end of the steering rack. I also had to do the rack guide adjustment (with the special 30mm wrench)

That seems like alot of stuff replaced. I only have one car running at the moment because my other car wont maintain proper oil pressure.
I hear clunking when I tilt the outter tie rod left and right.

some of the clunking is probably from the tie rod end and some is from your rack since you disconnected the power steering, they will make a clunk sound

I do remember that before I removed ps that the boots weren't ripped and I didn't hear a clunky sound. I can hear the clunking when going over bumps. When I'm going over a nasty road with alot of cracks my car sways like its trying to follow the cracks, especially on freeway.

thats not the power steering system, that might be your tie rod ends are worn, as well as other suspension parts, bushings etc are worn, it really needs to be all rebuilt at one time and an alignment done. I dont know why people are suggesting saving the original tie rod ends, if they are original they are probably shot, Moog is very reasonably priced and high quality stuff, and it gives you the option of the grease fitting

Well that Moog site pretty much explained everything a tie rod end does, and if it goes bad what happens to the car: wandering, erratic steering, bad tire wear, which is exactly what my car is experiencing .

IF you have a ripped boot on a tie rod end, or ball joint thats been left like that, plan on replacing the part, grit gets in there and accelerates wear, I did my front suspension about 8 years ago, and Moog wouldn't even sell a separate boot, their policy is once the boot tears the ball joint requires replacement, if you've ever taken apart a cv joint to clean and grease it, you know how hard it is to get every bit of grit out, and they come apart, a pressed together ball joint, you'll never get it clean, same with a tie rod end

Well that sucks… so do you suggest I get the whole tie rod assembly? And if I get the whole, does it come with the boot and bushing?
