how much better is a ys1 tranny then a j1??
Define "better."
The J1 has shorter gears, but no LSD. The YS1 has an LSD, but it won't hold up under slicks very well. I'd just get an S1 or a J1 (very similar gearing).

the ys1 has shorter gearing. it acutally almost the same as the usdm type r gearing but without the lsd. the ys1 also has a shorter final drive. great for the track but not on the freeway. i know from experience
my ys1 has been the difference in more than a couple battles with 94+ gsr's. i beat them off the line and they catch up going into third then i can usually pull them by the top of third. i'm puttin in a typeR lsd this winter and new synros. i love this tranny. the best cable tranny IMO. although highway cruising sucks. i try to keep it below 4.5k, which is around 75-80 mph, so i can save gas. its good for speed though. the car pulls strong up to 135 before i get scared of losing my lisence. thats all i know about my tranny.

Havent driven any other cable B16 trannies, but I loooooove my J1 tranny. Its so fun railing through the gears. Third and 4th are really strong and pull all the way to 8 grand with no hesitation. Heres a couple random rpm / speed for you
4th gear 7500k = 105mph fun fun
5th gear 3k = 50mph
5th gear 4250 = 70 mph
5th gear 4750 = 80 mph
If you cant get the LSD go with the J1 very good for city driving.

You are partly mistaken when you say that a JDM S1 and J1 are the same.
The JDM S1 and J1 do have the same gear ratios...BUT, they do not share the same final drives. I do not care what you have read on Katman's or any other sites. The S1 has the 4.440 final drive, where the J1 has the 4.266 final drive. Basicly the J1 is a S1 tranny, with the final drive of the Y1. On some J1 trannies, you will notice (if you'll got a keen eye), that a S1 ID sticker will be on the case, but somewhere close by will be an ink stamped J1. The later model J1's just had a J1 ID sticker.
I know this to be 110% true, as I have rebuilt quite a few JDM Y1, S1, and J1 trannies for myself and few others. Don't believe me?...then split a J1 case, and count the final drive ring gear...then count the final drive ring gear of a S1. The S1 will have 63 teeth, and the J1 will have 65...just like the Y1.
Currently I am using a USDM GS-R YS1 with a LS 5th gear and a Quaife LSD, and I'll tell you that it has been...and still is the best cable tranny I have ever used. I have the quickest 1st thur 3rd, with a long 5th (for that highway mileage).

I just find out that YOU are wrong!
I've got a J1 and my bro got a S1.Whe have the same acceleration.Whe have the same rpm at cruising speed.
I asked someone who have access to JDM parts(Live's there) and he told me to not let anyone tell me that J1 and S1 have different final drive.
Btw,I am not considering any info on any site for gear ratio....well,not for the J1/S1 'cause they don't have the right number.
I took mine directly from the Honda site in Japan.
You may be a good guy or a good trans guru....but as far as the final drive for the J1/S1.....you are wrong.
With 15" in 5th gear @120km/h the motor is running @~4600rpm.
There is no way I would be so high in a 4.2 final....
Someone may have change the final drive in the transmission.
Do your research!

THIS!!! is the whole reason don't post, and I tend to keep my info to myself.
I do all my homework using real trannies. I don't care what you think, or where your boyz live, or even what your sqeeze's speedO says...Until you open a JDM S1, J1, Y1, and a USDM S1/A1, and any of the YS1's...not to mention the 94+ hydros...then I think you should shut your PHUCKING mouth and stop phucking it up for the people who really want to learn.

I can also back his claim up of the 65 teeth on the final gear drive on the J1 trans.. I have takin a few apart myself, and I just double checked in my garage the tooth count.
