Aluminum Insight Drums on an EF: They Work!
After reading around on the net, I found a bunch of info about the 1st gen CRX HF aluminum drums being a nice lightweight swap for EF's.
However, they are no longer available or superseded to the standard iron drums. I did see a few mentions in threads such as these that one could use the still available 1st gen Insight drums.

I found ONE post from 2005 mentioning how to do it, so I took a random internet postings word for it and bought a set.
Give Setup credit, cause he was right. There was a little ring inside the lip that rubbed, and about 6 spot-welds that hold it on. Grab with a standard pair of pliers and twist, and it just pops right off and works like a charm!

Haven't weighed them on an accurate scale yet but they feel nicer in the hand!

The finned aluminum rear drum from the Insight will work and are available. The backing plate is easy to modify by simply pulling off the thin stamped steel ring that is spot welded to the backing plate. The thin guage ring can be removed witha pair of pliers or vise grips. It sounds quite ghetto but it can be done cleanly this way.

The heatsink might balance out the aluminum's natural properties. I feel like I should test this theory as I am road coursing my CRX this wknd and running the same course again in a couple of months.

you wont notice a difference.
its really not worth mentioning. and yet you did...
and theres really no positives. its totally aesthetic. just something "different".
if you want to make a lightweight argument... dont. its not worth mentioning either.

nice find...
the rears don't do much braking so i don't see it as an issue.
haha my tuner jordan road raced his insight at BIR with zero issues. lol

Wow, glad you cleared all that up. Weight reduction is a systematic approach. If you build the car from the beginning with weight reduction being a priority you can easily remove 80-100 lbs of dead weight. If I can save 2 lbs per drum I will cause it all adds up.
It is alot more than 2lbs per drum. It is more like 4-5. AND dont forget, it is also unsprung, rotating weight. It would be the same as changing to lighter wheels, which DOES make a difference.
Now, is that difference worth the price? No one else can decide that for you...

its 3 lbs difference. I have em. Do any of you? other than the OP.
ah yes... unsprung weight and rotational mass.... must get them aluminum lugnuts for teh racekar!
laptimes will be dropping like bikinis on a summer night!
btw, i actually have a lot of these HF drums i've pulled from the junkyard. if anyone wants to buy them from me. now at least i have a price point to compare them to new.

OP glad that you decided to try it out.
I like the mod.
I don't think you did it to be different as you could of stickerbomb your drumb & clear coated it. lol
however I do think there is little to be gained in the mod.
it's one of those mods which you can keep at the bottom of your list or even on your "maybe" list as there will always be areas of the car which superceeds removing weight from rear drum.
