Default Y49 CRX Build

Hello everybody! Today I will be beginning my first build thread for my yellow 1990 CRX Si. To kick off the tread, here are some pictures from when I first got her to now. So far I've installed a few missing plastic parts and an OEM Si axleback, which is currently hung on by a clothes hanger, because the previous owner decided he didn't need one of the exhaust hanging points and cut it off.

too bad they didn't paint it using the color code Y49….
its more a mustard yellow, should be more pale, like when you open the hood color.

looks really clean inside, and a good start.

I had suspicions that it wasn't painted using the color code. (I've never actually seen a Y-49 CRX ) I plan to repaint it the original color eventually..

Picked this b16a up the other day. It's missing the exhaust manifold and the o2 sensors. I have the obd0 jdm pr3 ecu for it, but I'm thinking that since I'm missing the two o2 sensors that I'll probably just convert to obd1.

Why not just get it running first on obd0? you only need the one o2 sensor.

I haven't quite decided yet, I've just assumed that the engine wouldn't run as good without both (Although a tune might be able to fix that). Do you know what type of o2 sensor I would need?

That's what I was saying to myself, but didn't wanna sound like a noob too soon. Almost looks like phoenix yellow.

Well, here it is. Finally got a good workspace so I'll be doing a lot more work on the rex now. Prepare for frequent future updates! Until then, here's what's happened since I've left off last. (The pictures aren't in order. Sorry)

I currently have the engine out to replace some seals and work on my transmission. 3rd gear grinds at high rpm and my transmission is leaking pretty bad. I haven't decided yet if I want to rebuild my transmission (which I have no experience with) or purchase another local transmission and get her running a bit sooner. Anybody know of a good synchro kit?

Getting her ready for her big day

Her big day finally came

bonus civic hatchback!

almost there

ground clearance is a problem...

Me right after I picked her up

OBD1!

here's my buddy standing around getting in the way

here she is dead at a friends house. I had to sand down my transmission ground contacts to get her running.

no more driveway engine removal!

Here she is as she currently sits

Should I bother sending this insert into innovative for a new one?

How about this one?

Figured out why that **** doesn't work

you see?

This **** doesn't work

can anyone guess what I've got in store?

Painted my radiator brackets

Where the hell can I get a replacement sunroof panel?

This header has got to go

Guess what was in that box

go ahead guess

had to get myself a new radiator fan for clearance

Looks like I'm in the market for some fog lights..

what is wrong with the header?

I ended up buying a carbon fiber sunroof panel after repairing mine several times and the rust just came back.

The header sits much too low to the ground and hits the pavement on bumps :/

Might I ask where you found a carbon fiber sunroof piece? The only ones I've been able to find for a second gen are listed for over a grand on eBay.

I believe the rywire subharness was around $60, $50 for an o2 sensor, $70 for a new distributor, and $100 for the ecu. Looking back now, I should have saved myself 60 bucks and made my own subharness after realizing how easy soldering is.

Well guys it's been a long time but I'm out of school for a while and I now have some time to work on my car and keep this thread updated. I haven't touched the crx much since I last posted but I got a whole lot of goodies in the mail the other day and I dropped my transmission off at a local Honda and Acura performance shop to get my new synchronizers, bearings, and shift change assembly installed. I should have the transmission back in a couple of days and I'll be installing it as soon as possible since my daily is currently out of commission.

picked up a new sunroof panel :D

Before I removed my interior for suspension installation, I decided to give my back seat a test fit. I think it looks pretty nice though I would like to try and sort out the fabric imperfection in the top right corner.

Found some rust as well as a large quantity of extra small raisins...

I think I found the hideout of the raisin dropper.

That little bugger had all of this crud tucked up into the side of the quarter panel.

Parts Parts Parts!

package contents

I really like the look of the engine with a spark plug cover and complete timing belt cover.

I was able to install the latching point for the rear seats back support while I had the interior out

These springs and shocks just aren't getting the job done...

That's more like it!

unfortunately upon installation of the coilovers, I found that my trailing arm bushings are going to need replacing ASAP

Looks like my camber arm bushings have also seen better days.

Installing of the mudflaps

It's been a year since I've really gotten to take her out and I'm starting to get excited.

I was fortunate enough to find a set of used coilovers with extended tophats all around

Got the transmission back on the engine last night. Hopefully I'll have the car running in the next few days.

Really enjoyed looking at the pictures of your build. With the engine out of the car so much, have you ever thought of painting up the engine bay? It made my friends car look sooo much better. Not like his other friend's PINK engine compartment in a black civic. His was black in a silver Prelude. Looked wicked and easier to clean.

I was actually planning to paint the bay this last time I had it out but my daily is now in the need of a new engine. I'll hopefully end up painting the engine bay the next time I have the engine out or when I repaint the whole car. If I don't end up painting it the original yellow then it'll probably end up "battleship grey".
