Default Accord issues

Hey guys,

First, let me start off by thanking the community. This place is great! I'm pretty new to this, if there is anything I need to do, let me know (like searching, key works, etc).

The issue i have is with my 96 Accord. I start it up just fine, no issues. it will idle but the car will start to backfire a bit. When I go to rev it up, it acts like its going to choke and when I'm driving normal (like slowly accelerating), it will drive fine. The thing is if I rev it up when parked, or I floor it, it will die out on me.

The last thing i did was rev it up to about 5000 RPM and it died, some smoke was coming out of the intake.

I'm thinking it can be the fuel filter (since I never have changed it), or the fuel pump, but if it was the pump I don't think any fuel would be going through. The spark plugs are about 5 months old.

There are no engine lights on, but the car is acting very badly. I don't recall, but this may have started after i put a bottle of seafoam on the gas tank while it was at half tank.

Ok, so I was searching a lot of the threads here and will try a few things. First I will disconnect the battery and see if that fixes it. If it does, thats great!

If not:

I read on a post about it being a bad O2 sensor. If i disconnect it, will it run normal (aside from the CEL being on)?

I can try to clean out the injectors, i read that might be an issue
The spark plugs, wires and distributor were all replaced about 6-7 months ago, i guess i can check the spark plugs to see if they need to be replaced.

Is there anything else you guys can suggest? I will be doing most of the checks, changes this weekend so any help is appreciated

Before disconnecting the battery, check for any stored codes in the PCM.
If you pull the battery before hand then you will have lost any stored codes.

Whomever came up with the idea to pull the battery power to 'fix' a running issue before checking for codes is a muppet.

could be a clogged cat ... you can remove the oxygen sensor which will allow possibly restricted exhaust gases to escape and see if it runs better
