I bought a ek hatch with a d16y7 and when I get into around 4500 rpms a whistle noise comes from my engine, does anyone know what is causing this? It sounds pretty cool but I'm just curious what it is. The only thing I notice in the engine is that there is a ipt fuel rail too if that helps, there might be more but I don't know.

Does the car have an aftermarket intake?

 

No the intake is stock

 

My aftermarket intake whistles at low rpms, but i partially blame that on the cone filter i use (has a second cone in the end piece). Although ive read of some people adjusting there idle screw to make it whistle on purpose. Personally i find it annoying. It reminds me of a vacuum leak.

...actually now that i said that, have you checked for vacuum leaks?

 

Sounds like you may have a crack or a tear in the intake piping, or the airbox is not closing/sealing tightly. Could also be a vacuum leak, but you would more than likely hear it at idle as well if it was a vacuum leak - and it would likely bump your idle RPM up as well...

 

My old d16 used to whistle at the throttle body when giving it gas at a certain rpm check it out . I think it was when it opened and closed inside were butterfly looking thang is .

If the OP's whistle does too, then he has an opportunity to pinpoint the source of the noise using an inexpensive engine stethoscope.

And a vacuum leak would cause a high and hunting idle.

 

No whistle noise in neutral, only when I'm smashing and it starts when I get at 5k rpms and it continues as I keep going

it sounds like a whistle, like a whining whistle. Kinda similar to a supercharger sound.
