Checking out an R tonight...
What kind of stuff should I check on it to make sure everything is kosher? I plan on putting a deposit down on the car if it's half way decent, what's like the top 5 or so things I need to check out quickly before buying it? I've been an avid reader of the forums, and have been interested in 'tegs since the first R I saw in 1997...
The car has a clean title, low miles, extended warranty, sounds awesome. I just need a quick list of things to do when I go tonight to check it out.
Thanks a ton guys... and hopefully I'll be at the next Chicago R meet with my 2000 PY!!!
Edit: And yes I did a search, the search sux worse than Ford.

i dont think there is anything particularly "type R related" that you have to check. Just check it over like you would any other car. check for uneven wear on the tires, rust, look over the engine bay, check for oil leaks around the head gasket, run the VIN, bounce the shocks, etc.
I found on some R's that just becuase it has a clean title doesn't mean that it hasn't been in an accident...just means that it wasn't in any reported accidents. I would put it up on a rack if you can and check the frame for any repairs.
Make sure that all hoses are in good shape as well as the oil...those can be indicators of how well the car was cared for.
Look at the interior in places where people don't usually remember to clean and see if you find anything...you might not want an R that was trashed on the inside and cleaned up later.
Check all of the VIN #'s on as many panels as you can find to make sure that they are all original. Look at the window VIN's, interior of doors, engine bay...etc.
Check for any signs of adverse tire wear, that will also indicate how the R was driven. If it is totally bald on the insides yet fine on the outsides, it was probably driven pretty hard.

n who looked real hard at his R but didn't notice all the original door dings!!

Yeah... hmm... Well, I know the normal "check out used cars" routine. Just wondering if there was anything that goes wrong on a lot of R's that I should check out. The dude got new tires on it, so it's hard to tell the wear pattern.

you might want to ask for service receipts if available also...good luck
Make sure all the VIN's are identical.
VIN's are located:
Around the drivers door
windshield
engine block would be hard to see with the header in the way
tranny housing
firewall
VTEC the beast once the engine is warm, it should not have any problems reaching redline in 3rd gear.
