Default CEL but can't read codes (OBD1)

I have a 1993 Del Sol SI. I just bought it a few days ago and I have a CEL. I'm trying to paperclip it but whenever is turn the car off and on, the CEL goes away until I start driving again. How do I read the code if it erases the code when it's cut off? The guy before me didn't do any work to it and didn't know the difference between a screw driver and a ratchet.

Leave the car running, and jump the service connector. You don't have to turn the car off.

So it will still blink and read the code with the engine on? Do I leave the paperclip on while the car is in use?

Yes, it will still blink. Wait until the CEL comes on, pull over somewhere safe, and insert the paperclip without turning the car off. Read the codes, and write them down on a piece of paper, or text them to yourself. If you aren't 100% sure about the blinks, record it with your phone, upload it to YouTube, and post it here. Once you're done recording the codes, remove the paperclip and continue on your way.
