Icon6 Fried ECU, what do?

Hi everyone,

I have a '92 Del Sol that has been a rather sturdy and reliable vehicle until recently. I was getting off the freeway and about to turn off the road when the car stalled and a bunch of smoke started wafting up into the cabin from the glove compartment area.

After towing the car back home, I was able to follow the scent of burnt circuitry to the ECU, which was scorched beyond any hope of repair.

So I ordered a used ECU from an identical model car off Ebay, installed it, and... nothing. Car won't start.

Someone told me that the ECU on these things need to have the correct VIN number, is that true? Also, if I need to check and re-program this used ECU, how do I go about doing that?

Thanks in advance!

VIN didn't show up on ECU til the 2000s. If you fried your ECU, chances are you fried something else under the hood.
