Default testing the temp sending unit?

Is there a way to test the sending unit itself? I attempted to test the wire with no effect following this http://www.ehow.com/how_5166704_trou...ture-gage.html. my gauge never moved. Does this mean the wiring is bad? Is there a way to test the gauge buy itself?

Volt measurement is DCV on 20
Temp sensor is the small one on the left. Use the ohm scale for resistance. The one on the right is a ecu sensor. Both are under the distributor.
