96 JDM ITR - What ECU?
Cliff Notes: What OBD2 USDM ECU options are there for a JDM 1996 ITR motor?
More information:
I picked up an 96 JDM ITR motor the other day. It is in and running great with the 96 JDM ECU. My hope is to be able to run a USDM OBD2 ECU in my car, for a couple reasons:
1. I have emissions testing and my car was originally a B16A2. I swapped in a USDM ITR oil pump and kept the second O2 sensor. An OBD2 ECU shouldn't throw any codes when used on my car. I originally planned to use my B16A2 ECU for a couple hours each year for emissions but...
2. I incorrectly thought that the JDM "OBD2" ECU would spit out information through the port where codes can be read. I have a ScanGauge II in my car and I am very intent on keeping it in the vehicle and in use. I regularly use it for many features - most importantly: MPH and MPG.
I know that the 96 JDM ITR is going to be the BEST ECU for the vehicle, but in order to use my ScanGauge II on a regular basis, this is not the ECU for me. I really want to find a USDM 97 ECU since I think it will be the most similar to the 96 JDM ECU, but it seems like it will be a daunting task with very few cars being produced that year in the states and the part is now discontinued. If I find one of these I will buy it on the spot, but if there is another viable option as far as a USDM OBD2 ECU that will run the car SAFELY and retain MOST of the performance, I am very interested.
If anyone has run a USDM 98+ ECU on a JDM 1997 engine please chime in and let me know what your experience has been. I do not mind losing a few horses as long as the motor will not be damaged in any way.
- Side note: How would a Legit JDM Mugen DC2 B18C ECU run on my car? I have the option of getting one well below value.
This is my first motor swap, so please bear with me if anything I have mentioned has been in error.
Thank You!!!

If your B16A2 is a USDM setup then the ECU is a P2T?
If so, and you have changed the oil pump, and ran the CKF sensor, and also the second o2 sensor, then that ECU should run the car fine for a lil trip to get it to pass.
Just dont beat on it when you have it in. There is no reason to crossover or go WOT. Go to the store, cruise around and let all of the monitors read. You should be able to make sure the monitors have passed their readings with your scan tool plugged in.
If your B16A2 ECU is a JDM unit, then you should get any OBD2A B series ECU to quickly pass emissions.

Thanks for the reply DC2-Productions. I totally agree with almost all of your information. If I can not acquire another OBD2 USDM ECU I will be using my P30 ECU for an hour or so to pass emissions. I was hoping to find another OBD2 ECU option for daily driving.
My former ECU is a P30.

'96 Del Sol would have that ECU yes.
You should be fine running the OBD2 P30 ECU. (Which is somewhat rare to find)
Just dont beat on it. Cruise and reset the monitors.
If thats the OEM USDM ECU that came with the Del Sol, then your OBD diagnostic CPU should be able to read it.

Todd00 - The motor swap not being in an Integra is somewhat irrelevant if you read through the post. The cliff notes would read, "What OBD2 USDM ECU options are there for a 1996 JDM ITR motor?" I think you ITR guys can handle that one, correct?
I am hoping to find an ITR owner with a JDM 96-97 ITR motor using a USDM OBD2 ECU.
I will also post a thread in the other forum as well.

A JDM ITR motor experiencing issues in a Delslo -- there's a better place to ask this question, don't you think?
Todd00 - Look man, until a mod moves, locks, or deletes this thread its staying. I know there are US ITR owners with JDM ITR swaps out there. I am looking for ECU advice from them. Again, the del Sol aspect has nothing to do with this inquiry. If it was not mentioned, this argument would not exist. So just forget I even mentioned anything about a del Sol.
Again, I am looking for an OBD2 USDM ECU option for my 97 JDM ITR motor - no more complicated than that.
CW-ITR - Thanks for the clarification. I know that the P73-A02 ECU will be tough to find. What do you think about getting a P73-A03 and rigging the fuel tank sensor somehow?
