Default KYB AGX vs. Tokiko Illumina Discussion

Are you a owners of either of these adjustable shocks?

What is your first hand impression?

What is your suspension setup?

It is a toss up between these, and I have to choose.

I know Koni Yellows are great, but the price doesn't justify it for me.

Thanks for all the input.

i have tokico illumina's.....GREAT shocks....5 different settings of ride adjustability...w/ a few clicks, you can go from a soft plush ride, into autoX hardcore set up! I keep mine on 3..keeping it a little stiff, but enough to soak up the bumps in the road...i have no complaints...as for my coilovers, i want to sell my weapon r coilovers, and get some 2" lower springs now.........

What is the maximum amount of lowering you can do on the Tokiko Illumina's before they do not warranty the shocks anymore?

I have heard that the KYB AGX's don't work well with the GroundControl coilovers? Anybody has any experience with this combo and can prove this wrong? I don't have the funds either to buy the konis but if the KYB's can't take the GC coilovers, then maybe it will be the koni's?

I have had my KYB AGX/Prokit setup for about a month now and love it compared to stock on my 97 GSR. The AGX's for my car are adjustable 4 ways, at the top of the strut bolt, which makes adjusting super easy.. i have it set on 3 which is firm, but suitable for daily driving. Even with these low spring rate Prokits, the difference is definitely noticable.. the car leans and pitches a lot less, cornering is flatter and more fun.. I also got a 4pt Neuspeed front upper strut bar which i HIGHLY recommend. Overall an awesome setup.. I'm very satisfied. I paid $320 shipped for the AGX's from a-plus autoparts (Ebay).. and i got hooked up with the prokits for 100 and the neuspeed bar for 60. I'm not an autox freak, just wanted to safely lower my car and tune the suspension and make my car handle well so this setup is perfect for me. IF you are a hardcore autocrosser this setup probably would not be ideal.

As for KYB AGX's and their support for GC coilovers, it depends on the spring rate of the springs you're using. Koni is great because it can handle high spring rates and is a super stiff shock.. I personally would not go with a spring rate more than 500 for either front or rear if using the AGX's.

SO, if you ahve the money or are an autocrosser, go Koni, if on a budget and do more daily driving than hardcore driving, go AGX.

My well suspension setup consists of:

H&R Sport Springs (1.8" Front, 1.50" Rear) (276 lb/in 276 lb/in Spring Rates)
OEM ITR Front Strut Bar
OEM ITR 22mm Rear Sway Bar
JDM Rear Upper Strut Bar
Custom Aluminum Rear Trunk Bar.

Still running on stock shocks.

The only thing I hear bad about KYB is that you cannot lower your >1.5" or they won't warranty the shocks. I'm lowered 1.8 and 1.5. Hmm

i usually keep mine on 4 up front and 3 in the rear. i like it stiff

i hate weapon-r coilovers. they were the worst thing that has ever happened to my car. i want to try to sell them to some unsuspecting e-bayer and let them experience the living hell of weapon-r circuit pro coilovers

just bought neuspeed sport springs that will be going in this weekend.

I have tokico illuminis w/ground controls. Absolutely love it. The shocks were the most beneficial part to me on my car, because of ride quality and handling. I was on stock shocks and gc's for a year and a half, and the ride quality was mediocre.
