Power Locks / Keyless Entry. How hard? Quality kits?
Hey guys, I am very interested in joining the joining the 21st century of cars and adding keyless entry / power locks to my car. I have an 89 Crx Si.
Has anyone ever really well documented the process on our cars? Id really love to know what Im diving into before hand. I see alot of kits on ebay but none seem specific to our doors, and the quality doesnt seem to be sound. Has anyone had any luck with a certain brand or style that works easy on the Crx/Civic?
Thanks guys!

No thanks bud, this is DIY.
This is the kit that has my eye, seems like the wiring harness it comes with and that little box may do everything. And the fobs. Am I missing something?

Im curious how they would be wired into our EF chassis though, if theres a spot or a diagram

Well, this is the short story. You must be able to bend wire, mount actuators and run wires. The actuators have to be mounted to clear the door panels and function easily. Also, you have to use bolts and nuts with lock washers, DO NOT rely on sheet metal screws as they will not hold tightly long term. Anyway, this is not rocket science, just power locks. I personally have not used this kit, the majority of the suppliers I have used are not in this business any longer. I personally stopped performing this job when the large box stores drove wages down and I and many who used to perform a lot of custom fabrications are no longer in the industry.

I get the mounting part aspect now, and how to do it properly in-line with the rod with good door panel clearance. Its the wiring to power it Im uneasy about, the ebay link I posted for the kit has an instruction picture, but it wont zoom any more on my laptop, it looks like the wires are the top says RELAY.. can you understand there diagram?
I am wiring this up as a standalone remote power door lock kit I suppose, no alarm or anything else wired in. Just use the fob to lock and unlock the door.

I found a better picture of there install diagram, the top wires that look to say relay and dead end which lead me to think wiring was going to be hard was incorrect. They are 2 wires for an alarm. This power door kit is super easy to install, just power and ground to the box, and from the box to each seperate door actuator.
Hardest more time consuming part will be fishing wires. Anyone have tips on how to get wires through the factory gromets?

You can get through the rubber pieces just fine, the problem I had was getting around the factory harness and plugs. I actually drilled a couple holes to fish the wires through, but either way you will need to get creative. I used some random ebay actuators and an alarm with built-in relays for locks.

The kit I linked though, is there more to it than Im thinking? Or is it simply power and ground to the control box, then mount an actuator in each door and run the pre determined wires from the box to them.. Am i missing something, or is it that easy? No relays needed at all...
I would like to buy the kit I linked (two actually, one for the GF's car if its that easy)

Like the diagram on the ebay link shows a brown and white that can wire to the alarm, would they be needed if you DIDNT have an alarm at all? What function would they have for the alarm... or can I just not worry about those 2 wires
Right, you wouldn't worry about alarm wires. That's a universal kit, it should be as easy as hooking up power, ground and mounting the actuators.
I just got my alarm installed yesterday with a clifford 330.3x. Alarm is pretty good for the price of $125 and it comes with on board door lock relays. I also got these actuators Installed Install Essentials 524N High Power Door Lock Motor by Directed Electronics http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009SWLE6/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_v2Jqtb1179EQS. I mainly got them based on the reviews and i know its only been two days but this set up works perfect. Hope i can help!
Just make sure you get actuators that will clear the door panels. I ran into some larger ones that would not fit in the gap and line up correctly.
I've heard people using OEM actuators from Hondas before.

Not hard, I did locks with actuators and windows. The hardest part honestly was running the wires through the door elegantly and mounting the actuators such that the interior panel fit back on nicely.
