Default Need help on what to do with this fuel tank...

Hey guys...

So I'm trying to get this car running after sitting after 3 years. I'll be replacing the motor altogether, but for now, I'm trying to get it to just start. The fuel pump i know is bad. I've got the fuel pump out, and know how to replace it.

The gas was definitely bad, theres surely rust in there. The question is what to do. Replacing it is extremely expensive with a new one, I can try to locate a used one from a junk car but may or may not be any worse than the one I've already got. So trying right now to see if theres any way to save this one.

I've watched a few videos on on how to clean it out. I've heard soap water and limestone rocks and all kindsa stuff. Also read something about taking it to a radiator shop that they have a vat of stuff that they soak it in to get all the **** out.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I know mine isn't in good shape inside. I've seen what a good one looks like, and well here are a few pics. Any suggestions would be very very appreciated....

First pic is one i found elsewhere on the forum that gives me an idea of what it should look like. Rest is mine that I've got to deal with....

Oh damn, that must have been sitting for a LONG time, and with water in the fuel or something.

Honestly I would say just find another tank, and any that have not had water inside should not be rusted like that. I have drained gas tanks that had fuel sitting in them since the '80s that didn't have rust like that.

yea new tanks are like $350 from honda which i'm obviously trying to avoid.

I found a local junk yard taht has one for $35, its graded "A" condition on the website but not sure if it actually will be rust free. but for a price difference that large its worth taking a look so I'l lbe hitting thatu p on Saturday (hopefully its still there)

So you're thinking this is too far gone to even attempt to refurbish?

Yeah man, even if the $35 dollar tank at the yard isn't perfect, it will probably be a much better starting point than that is.

Even if you get a used tank with some surface rust there are fuel tank sealer kits that will take care of it.

For example:
