1999 acura cl 2.3 balance shaft
im unsure what to do. i have a 1999 acura cl 2.3. i justed replaced many seals and still leaking took off timing cover and the oil is sprizting out from the balance shaft seal. someone said its factory pressed and cant be done had to replace the balance shaft completly. if so i dont even see where i could buy a new one?/
No, the seal is quite replaceable, you have to take off the pulley first. IIRC, I used an old timing belt and vice grips to hold the pulley when I did this job.
Don't scratch the block when you get the seal out!
There is a metal retainer that is designed to help keep this seal from popping out. You should put this retainer on when you replace the seal. I think the part # is 06923-P0A-306.

Brages is correct. I just replaced mine - not hard to find a replacement 'balance shaft seal'. Also NAPA sells the retainer clip for something like $4. The seal has a reputation of popping out from time to time.
On removing the balancer shaft gear (for the belt) ... I removed the balancer belt gear from the balancer shaft using a section of an old balancer belt and a pipe wrench. I put the section of old balancer belt around the gear to protect it, then used a 12" or so pipe wrench around the gear to hold it. The pipe wrench holding the gear (through the rubber of the old belt) held the gear very snugly ... so taking out the shaft bolt was very easy. Also a reliable way to reinstall.
As for the seal removal ... I used a paint can opener from Home Depot. It has a curved bend in it for lifting a paint can lid, that is a good size for removing the seal. Slide it next to the shaft with the curved 'hook' part facing away from the shaft. check the shaft for minor scratches after the seal is removed - should not be any - but if you see one, steel wool should remove it.
On installing the seal, I suggest tapping on the outside edge going around it ... the outside edge is where the metal is. Many little taps around the seal - being patient - works much much better than whacking it in and helps prevent seal damage.
Good luck.
