In need of a cheap paint job
My EJ1 is in dire need of a fresh coat of paint. With the honda cancer coming back after one year, it's time to rip out the bondo and start over again, with a bit more sanding and prep work. I know maaco does inexpensive paint jobs, but they charge for prep, so i was thinking I could get my whip sanded down and filled with bondo where needed, and sanded again, then taken to the car wash to remove debris from surface, and waiting a few days to let it dry up. Has anybody had any luck with maaco paint jobs? I'm talking the 300 dollar deal, no fancy *** 2000 dollar job.
My original plan was to do all this and then just do a primer gray paint job, but it seems like a PITA to do outside and all the taping will rustle my jimmies. I was thinking to prep it up, and although they do the taping, i would do some taping on important parts since i've heard they like to cut corners when taping.
Pics will be appreciated.

umm...you could do it... You shouldnt put bondo into rust holes, bondo is like a sponge and will absorb water and rust under it. If you dont want to fix it correctly by welding in new metal. You will need to use a short strand fiberglass reinforced bondo (kitty hair), its water resistant and should last alittle longer.

If it has rust, address that first. As far as paint goes, it's super easy to spray it yourself or find someone locally who does it. Maaco is garbage. I'd only use Maaco if I was trying to flip a car and pass on the problem to someone else.
There is good single stage poly urethane paint available that cost about $200 a gallon. Do the prep yourself, lots of it. Tape off the 'important' stuff and have someone spray it for you. Might be double the Maaco price, but it will last a decade and then some compared to a year or two before it goes to crap.

Taking it through a car wash prepped is a bad idea, not only is body filler like a sponge sanded paint and primer is also like a sponge and water in car washes is usually not filtered well so there will be contaminants for sure, if cancer is bad wouldn't just put filler over it either, won't last long.
