Okay so the last case I had was cracked. Went to install a new one(also a b16 casing) and the case drops down fine, shifts fine when the case is not tightened down. But when I get the case tightened down it won't shift to any gears except 3rd and 4th. I didn't touch anything else in the trans. Alls I did was swap casings. Please an help is appreciated. I need this done to put my swap in!!
What did you do with the shift fork bolt/spring/ball bearing? There should be 2 of them: one for 1-2, and one for 3-4. Make sure each has a NEW crush washer under the bolt, and that you DO NOT over-tighten them. They go on the outer case half.

Is the shift rod able to move over into the 1/2 and 5/R shift gates? Or can it not even move left and right into those gates?

If the fingers on #6 in the above picture are bent, the "gates" won't line up to get to either "outside" gates.
Changing the trans case is not as simple as one might believe...
How did you check the mainshaft free end-play ??? It sounds as though it is too tight, meaning that the shim in the top of the trans case is too thick.
Swapping cases properly requires some very unique and expensive tools and fixtures to accurately measure these clearances... and without them, you are "guessing" if you know what I mean.
Without being well prepared, you might consider welding up the crack in the old case.

Okay so got an update. I changed the selector an now it shifts into gears fine with the case bolted together. But when I put the bolts with the springs in them(forgot the right name) it won't go Into gears
Make sure the shift rods are in neutral positions and that you've installed crush washers on the detent bolts that you're talking about.

Is the snap ring. Fully clipped into bearing when won't go into gear?
