I've got a 92 Civic with 134000 miles on it. I've owned the car for 3 years and it's time to replace the front and rear brakes. I'm planning to do it myself but this is my first time doing brakes so I have some questions about it.

1. Should I machine the rotors or can I just use them as is?
Ok, I know everyone will probably say machine them (or replace) but I thought I'd ask anyway.

2. Do I need to replace the drums?
I pulled off one of the back wheels to take a look. The drum seemed to just have normal wear. The shoes need to be replaced but there is still enough meat so that there hasn't been any metal on metal contact.

3. The wheel cylinder on one of back wheels had a small tear in the boot. Can I just replace the boot and I'm good to go?

1. Definitely machine the rotors.

2. If you can afford it I would replace the drums.

3. I would just replace the whole wheel cylinder.

 

1. i wouldn't machine, you can get replacements for cheap.

2. if i can remember of the top of my head(correct me if im wrong), you shouldn't have to buy new drums unless there is major gouging on the inside.

3. it's not that expensive to replace wheel cylinder.

 

Doh! I wasn't even thinking about replacements. But yeah replacements are the route to go. Not much more if any than having rotors turned.

Yeah no need for new drums unless they are too thin or have waves/gouges in them. But it's always nice to have all new brakes if its in the budget.
