greetings from Sacramento, CA
Hey guys, my name is John and I've been reading a lot of threads on here over the past couple months, so I figured it was time to actually register.
Right now my daily driver is a 1994 Honda Accord LX (everything stock). I got the car from my sister, who sort of neglected it over the years... It has not been maintained very well, so now I'm trying to figure out what I should be doing to make up for years of neglect. I did my first ever oil change, which was fun, and replaced the starter (it was making funny grinding noises and the car was having issues starting up, which has now been solved).
I'm going to make another thread probably, but figured I'd ask in here anyways... What else should I look into doing other than the oil change? When I changed the oil I also added some oil additive and when I filled up the tank I added fuel injector cleaner to clean out the fuel system. The engine sounds like it is running much more smoothly now, and acceleration is smoother as well.
So, what's next? Should I replace the fuel filter once I burn through the tank with the fuel system cleaner in it? I've read that those cleaners can dislodge sludge that then clogs up the fuel filter sometimes. What about changing the spark plugs? The one thing that I know has been replaced recently is the timing belt, and I also have fresh tires. What else should I be looking into?
Just to give a little background about myself, I'm 24 and have never really been taught much about working on cars, but have gained an interest in it recently. Aside from starting to do basic maintenance on the Honda, I'm also looking for a project car that I can take apart, put back together, upgrade parts on, etc and generally just use as a learning platform. I really want to get an old 280z or something, but I'm thinking an early-mid '90s Integra/civic or similar would be more practical in terms of parts cost/availability and skill crossover to my accord. Also was thinkin about an old vw bug or and old dodge dart or something. Any feedback in this area would be great... What do you think would be a good cheap car to learn on (but still have fun driving)?
Anyways, this intro is probably too long so I'll shut up now. Glad to be here, hopefully I can learn enough from you guys so I'll eventually be able to contribute and give something back to the community. Thanks!
