Default Rusty rex tie rod ends

I tried to remove the tie rod ends from my 91 crx Dx. I was unable to budge the lock nut. Is there a super secret honda trick to getting these buggers off? I soaked them with pblaster every hour since 8am cst. Still no movement.

I took a big (22m?) wrench I bought at lowes and a rubber mallet. Bought 20 swings later, POP. Easy. Probably not the way you are suppose to do it. But I can't imagine it being much worse than busting out the torch and heating them. That works well too.

I am pretty sure I had to cut into mine with a die grinder with a cutoff wheel (no heat torch). It heats it up, and relieves the tension on a nut. I did not have to cut all the way either, just a groove, then finished it with a wrench and a socket. Of course you will need a new nut!

lock the tie rod with an adjustable wrench to something like the swaybar. then put the 22mm on the lock nut and sit so you can push with your leg.

dont kick it, just push.

another tip is that the EG and DC's use 19mm lock nuts, with the same thread. i like switching it out with those so i dont have to carry a 22mm wrench in my toolbag, since its the only 22mm on the car.

I went out and bought a 19mm and 22mm box end wrench. I had to soak the lock but with blaster overnight but I finally got passenger side out. The driver side is still stuck. I'm saying f*** that one and replace the inner tie rod as well.

The REAL bitch is pinning the new ones back in there as good as the originals were with the steering rack still in the car. THAT was tons of fun...

why is that a problem?

you just use two wrenches...

its only stuck on there good because of corrosion.

Good tip with the EG/DC tie rod lock nut Tyson. Just added those to my shopping cart on Majestic Honda since I have the front end apart

That was an amazing tip. The 19mm is a common size. But that 22mm is quite rare. I think the only other thing it does is my O2, which may not be the factory size.

Wait, he's talking about the regular lock nut that holds the outer to the inner? I work on early 90s Honda's a LOT and have never run into an issue getting it off due to corrosion or anything else for that matter.

I think I MAY have misread. I just assumed he was talking about the tie rod lock washer. Which should DEFINITELY be hammered to the rack like this, and which is a BITCH to hammer the new one on properly with the rack in LOL. Hence my use of the word pinning.

Sorry for the confusion. Never had a problem with the lock nut, just two wrenches like everyone says.

Anyway, this is kind of on topic, but the rack and pinion boots for the driver and passenger side have different diameters which attach to the rack. Just throwing this out there for anyone searching for it. There is about a 5mm difference between the two with the driver side as the larger one.
