Default help with b20/b17 vtec

So iv got a 92 gsr that of course needs rebuilt, rings are bad and the headgasket is bad, 225k on it. So my plan is an all motor build, stock rods, ctr pistons ctr cams arp rod and main bolts along with an align hone etc you get the idea. So temporarily id like to still be able to drive the car, so my plan was to pick up a b20 cheap with low miles and just swap the short block, maintain use of the b17 head and manifold and harness, literally just swap blocks tap the pressure switch to get oil to the vtec solenoid and b on my way... however i do not have any software at the moment... and since its an obd1 car it has no knock sensor right? So therefore b20 or even a b16 short block swap will raise my compression higher then 9.7:1 so should i b worried about pinging and detonation? How can i make this work, il pick up s100 after i build the b17 block but for now with a b20 or b16 block can i just turn the distributor to retard the timing a bit? Idk what to do!
