As I said above I have a 92 eg cx with about 500k miles and other than a tune up and exhaust and other misc things hasn't has any serious work done to it. I know very little about cars and am just getting into this. My dad helps me as much as possible but I'm trying to do things myself with someone watching over me to help when I need it. It's had this misfire for awhile now. When I stop at a light it will shutter and sound like it's running on one leg...like it could shut off at any time. My dad said it could be a sticky valve but he's not sure. I have access to a lift and tools, but have no clue what I'm doing, or what to look for.

 

Well 500K is a lot of miles even for a Honda. You might want to get your compression checked to start.

 

At 500k miles it could be a list of things.

When you accelerate does the car run better or worse? Give us some info on how it drives. A cx doesnt have a tachometer, does it? or can you determine what RPM you are idling at.

 

When I accelerate it completely stops. It's only when I'm idling. No I don't have a tach and I have no idea what rpm I'm idling at, Is there a way I could find out?

Okay. I'll have to see if I can get someone to help me do a compression test.

 

I did a compression test and it was 100 across the board.
I was told that was about 50 low and she was on her way out. There was oil on my spark plugs so I got a new valve cover gasket with spark plug tubes and it didn't fix the misfire. Anyone have any ideas?

 

How much oil? Make sure to clean off the spark plug wires as well, where they "snap" onto the plug. There is a little spring conductor in there can gets soaked with oil as well an. Just pop it off and spray it out with brake clean. Had that issue myself, cleaned the plug terminal but not the wire terminal. Its normal to see some oil in the plug tubes but not a soaking wet plug.

I have been dealing with a similar idle in a del sol of mine, it was idling really low (500rpm) and the car was shaking. It may of seemed like a misfire to some people. Which is normal because they are kind of "shaky" engines and motor mounts start to wear out. I adjusted the throttle cable just A LITTLE and bumped up the idle some (800rpm) and it was much better.. but without a tachometer to read RPM is it hard to tell.
