Default HELP axles problem gap/leak

Just purchase this 99' honda civic dx. notice leaks under the transmission case. i went under the car and notice my driver side axle had like inch gap or so... and was leaking fluid. I took the axle out and try to put it back in, no matter what i do the gap is there..Then i notice..

im guessing thats the problem? causing the gap?

need some inputs before buying new axles

Thanks alot!

That snap ring looks like it's too wide. You could try a new snap ring or buy another axle.

Not sure that will be effective.

I actually don't remember how the end of my axles looked when I did my tranny swap but I don't think they looked rounded like that.

I suspect whomever tried putting the axle in only got the very end in and the differential chewed it up. While you have it up, shine a light in and see if the teeth of the differential is chewed up too. If it is, then it may be quite likely you won't get the axel in properly.

Fortunately, there is a strong magnet in the tranny and the axles I believe are ferrous metal so would be attracted to the magnet instead of flowing through the tranny.

I'm also assuming a manual transmission.

If the teeth of the differential are still in good shape, then check the rounded teeth on the end of the axle to be sure no part of those teeth are wider than the intact teeth. You want to be sure the rounded teeth aren't blocking the grooves of the good teeth or the grooves of the differential teeth preventing insertion.

There is still a chance you can do as the other poster mentioned of turning the wheel to get the axle in properly.

Good luck.

Well I've heard about fitment issues with axles from autozone etc... That could be the issue? You should try another one to see if there's any difference.

It is an manual transmission and only whistles when in 5th gear, while I'm accelerating... as soon as I stop giving it gas, so does the noise stop.

That axle end is mangled for sure. The splines at the tip should be just like the rest of the splines on the shaft.

If I were you, I would stop trying to seat that axle and get a new one. Also inspect and clean out the diff if you can. You might try sticking a magnet tool in there to get any fillings/chips out of there. Also, take a look at the inner splines to see if they are damaged.

It could be, but it also could be any of the other bearings in there of which there are many - among other possible causes.
