Hello, I have an 04 Accord with the 2.4 motor. I have a battery drain that can cause my battery to die overnight. I tested the drain in series along the negative battery cable and the reading is 0.5 on the 10A setting. I have checked some of the wiring in the engine bay to get for broken/corroded wires but most everything looks good. There are two ground wires though that are pretty bad one from the engine to ground on the left side of the engine bay and one from the transmission to the body on the right hand side under the fuse panel and air box. I talked to a friend about this and he said these two grounds would not likely drain my battery so quickly. Any advice on what else I can check would be greatly appreciated.

The battery is good, Ive had two new ones and same problem occurs. I took out the part of the battery dying with the positive still connected because the battery was weak from dying all the time.

 

Go over every fuse in your fuse box (the tops of them have a little test point exposed), find out which circuit is has some juice running through it. Then, trace it back.

 

How would I do that? With the battery disconnected, multimeter set to what? what exactly would I check?

 

So an update, I attached a test light and started pulling fuses, the ECU fuse turned the light out, wondering if there is a secondary fuse panel where I can try and narrow down the problem further?

 

First off get or borrow an amp probe
Then open your hood, roll down the drivers window. Close all doors and remove the key out of the ignition. Then zero out the amp probe and see what your draw is at. You need to wait roughly 2 minutes after the last door was shut to see what actual draw is unless you have Bluetooth which extends that time to 20 minutes. Then look at what the draw is. It should be no more than .050 on most cars. Then if you see that draw is higher start pulling fuses one by one and pay attention to the fuse and amp probe. Once you pulled the fuse that drops the draw you know which circuit to go after.

 

I have done this.... the reading is 0.5, when I remove the Backup reinitialisation 40 fuse, the reading goes down to 0.05, need to know what to do next now...

 

Find a wiring diagram and find out what that fuse supplies power to....

 

Your best friend is a oem etm. If I get a chance tomorrow I'll look it up in the book and take a pict for you as to what all runs on that circuit. Tell me exactly what year and model (4cyl 6 cyl, lx, ex, exl) and which fuse it is.

 

It is an 04 accord EX 2.4L, that would be great ive been looking for a wiring diagram but haven't been successful. It is the 40 amp fuse for the BACKUP reinitialisation which is the ECU fuse.

 

So the verdict is, it is the radio, when the radio fuse inside the car is pulled the amperage drops to 0.02, and using the test light puts the light out, now how can i fix this problem? (other than leaving the fuse out) it is not an aftermarket stereo.

 

by any chance is your cigar lighter & interior lights on same circuit?

the majority of vehicles I have worked on, the problem is on radio, cigar, interior light circuit, with majority, nearly 99% on interior light somewhere

sometimes door switches, with drivers door most problematic, have seen wires shift over time & short under headliner, I have seen mice get to wires to interior lights,

my Jeep, that I bought cheap because of several wiring issues, the previous owner & garage couldnt figure out, it was bad glove box light switch, also it was Ohio, & road salt had attacked wiring harnes in engine compartment, & with new wires soldered in, & glove box switch fixed, it has been problem free for several years electrically.

 

Sorry work was really busy today so I didn't get a chance to get you that etm. As far as the radio goes I've replace 4 for that same condition. Sometimes there are stereo repair shops that will fix them if you bring it in. I think it's roughly $200-250 to repair it.

 

What about an after market stereo? I have one I can pull from m old car to put in?

 

listen bro imam help u im a Honda tech draw aren't that bad it is very important things are set up properly before you begin to check battery has to be good before u start

step1 one if the hood is open latch it close with a screw driver to make the bcm think its closed

step two
either disconnect driver door switch to work in car while pin pointing draw or make sure all doors are lock be sure interior lights aren't left on good time to check all door switches manually

step 3 remove key from the ignition and lock the vehicle make the horn beep by hitting the lock button twice

now be sure your meter leads are in the right spot Amps and com ground put it in series with the neg terminal of batt

if the car has navi it can take up to 20min to disapate sometimes you want nothing higher than.50mili amps any thing Above will create a draw

if draw is present start by pulling back up fuse underhood or ign fuse if it leaves the fun has begun start unplugin 1 by 1 on that circuit

 

if u have aftermarket items leave them connected measure the draw and disconnect one by 1 if nothing is aftermarket gotta go by the book

 

REEM, Im a girl , I have done all the tests, the radio fuse under the dash IS the problem, with it in the reading is 500Ma or 0.5 on the meter, it goes down to 20 Ma or 0.02 on the meter.

My question now is simply whether putting in an aftermarket deck will solve this problem or if it is a wiring problem or if I am just doomed to not have music in my car by leaving the fuse out.

 

Does the radio fuse ONLY power up the radio? Unplug the radio itself and see if the draw goes away. Removing fuses only points you in the direction of the draw,it is not a conclusive test until you remove the suspected component from the loop....

 

I AGREE with dcfiver put the fuse back in recreate the draw and unplug the radio see if the draw leave...... if the fuse u pulled is fuse 5 underdash 10 its only for the radio unless the car has xm if it does unplug the xm reciver if it doesn't deff with the radioif unplugging the radio harness connector did it I would get another radio and re check
