Default swapping engines and going turbo all at the same time, input needed

Hello all.

ive been lurking around here for some time, and i am not new to hondas but i AM new to tuning them. Ive had a 1988 crx, to a 92 EG hatch, on over to a DC2 gsr, and finally to a 2003 DC5-S....

Enter DB7.

its a 2000 Voltage Blue Metallic sedan, GS. Its super cool and im ready to build. its got a 200k miles i have all selections of engine/trans combos available and am wondering which i should go with? im set on B series. what im not set on is B18B, B18C1, B20B? which is better for turbo? and which trans should i go with and why? my LS 5 speed trans is shot. it needs a rebuild or a replacement. as far as forced induction, which kit should i look into? i need something dependable and all inclusive. bolt it all on, tune it, and hit the streets!

the goal: 300-350 WHP, daily driven by a responsible adult

the budget: 3500-4500

would it be a better idea to install the FI kit on the new engine while its out of the car, than it would be to rip out the old, install the new, and then try to add the kit? what do i need to "tune" the new setup? i plan on taking to a well known individual in the area to do the actual tuning. sorry for so many questions i know where i want to be, i just cant quite fiqure out how to get there. i am very well mechanically inclined, and have a good understanding of the work involved.

any tips, comments, and opinions are welcome. thanks in advance!

To start the b18c1 would be the best choice since you're looking at 350+ thing is do you already have it lying around ?, if not there goes 2-2.5K of your budget. And leaves 2.5 to boost which is NOT enough especially for 300+ the stock internals won't hold past 300 safely so aftermarket pistons/rods are needed. by "f1 kit" what do you mean? is this one found on ebay for a grand ? if so ditch that idea now those things are junk and fail within no time. for what trans the gsr is the best of both the b16/ls imo. For an EMS to tune on I highly recommend Hondata's s300 but if 550$ is a bit steep then Neptune/chrome will work, just budget 400$ on top for a good tune the most important part. in essence you'll be looking at 3.5-4K just for the turbo set up on it's own.

ok i can appriciate that. when i said FI i mean forced induction kit. what would you suggest i could get out of stock internals on a b18c1 with a decent turbo kit? i was looking around at different kits like the go-autoworks street kit for 2-2.5k?

ahh ok well in general it's better to piece one together rather then a "kit" if you wanted you could do that but you'll still need to ad things such as the oil feed lines+catch can and a boost & AF/R gauge etc, then there's still the fact that it needs to be tuned. if you still have the stock exhaust that will seriously limit you. as for the internals the safe limit it 300whp beyond that and you're going to start pushing your luck.

I would go with a GSR swap, then read through the Forced Induction forum and FAQ, and start piecing together a kit. You can buy a ready-made kit, but remember they don't include everything

Ok. Little update here... ive now picked up a JDM B18C1 with a matching GS-R transmission with factory LSD. I got the ECU axels and linkages with the swap.. What do I need to do to make it work in my usdm B18b DB7? Ive been searching with no luck....everything I find is very generic and not quite applicable to me. This will also be my first ever swap....what should I look at upgrading or replacing along with the swap?

If I were you I would get some new motor mounts since yours are at 200k I'm sure, if youre going turbo a ported intake manifold and throttle body would help quite a bit, and as for turbo kits... go autoworks is great! super helpful and great customer service, you could definately talk to them and im sure they would help you with your application and create a kit for your needs. also would do some simple head work, maybe port and polished, upgraded cams, valve train, and cam gears.

No all of this is pointless and a waste of money. A stock b series is good for 300-330 whp. After that it is a roll of the dice. Everything mentioned above is worthless because your still limited to the same power. A turbo kit will put you in the power range all by itself.

Arp head studs and a go-autoworks turbo kit and you will have a fun car to drive! Keep it as simple as possible for your power goals.

You can wire everything up and run the needed wiring to the ecu. Or to be more of a plug and play deal, find a em1 engine harness. All you would need to wire up is iab and knock sensor.

Right on. Go-autoworks looks like a great place to start my setup. First step for me is going to be doing the actual swap. So basically all I need to do is wire up VTEC to my new ECU that comes with the swap since in using my LS engine harness...I'm thinking I will get the rywire VTEC harness for that. As far as the hydraulic trans anything special I have to do to connect it? The swap should be here Monday the 24th

Thought you had a civic. Yes ls harness will work fine. Everything should drop into place with no problem.
