96 Civic LX overheated, loud pop sound
Hi, a few months ago I was driving down the highway when my car overheated and there was a loud pop sound. I've talked to several people and they say that the car jumped time but I wanted to check with experts before being taking advantage of by a mechanic lol. I also know that there's a hole in the radiator. If anyone has any idea as to what could have gone wrong I would greatly appreciate the advice.
Where did this pop sound, sound like it came from? Under the hood, from the back of the car? And can you describe the pop, did it sound like metal slamming metal or did it sound like an M80 firecracker exploding?
Do you know how to check your mechanical timing? You should be able to get an idea of how in the FAQ stickied at the top of this forum.
You say you have a hole in the radiator, do you have a hole in your front grill? Maybe a rock flew through your grill and radiator and that was the pop you heard?

Since I can't find the diagram take the #1 spark plug(and the others) out put a 12'' 3/8th dr extension down the #1 tube rotate the engine by hand via the 17mm crank pulley bolt. when the socket is at it's highest point that's TDC for the block the cam gear should have "UP" indicated on it if it isn't at "up" after 2 rotations of the crank your timing is off.
just remember the crank has to spin twice before you can confirm if your timing is on/off. as for the loud pop well probably something hit your rad pics of the hole in rad ?
