Default Frankenstien Engine?

So i have a 92 accord ex 5spd. I know for a fact it has an F22A6 which is non vtec however when i hit 4k in every gear it gets louder and there is a noticeable improvement in torque. I bought the car from one of my good friends and when he was describing it to me he referred to it as a "Frankenstein Engine" and told me that it had a different head and intake manifold. I was just hoping that someone could shed some light on this considering im relatively new to the honda world. Id just like to know how i could tell what engine the other parts came from.

Post up some pics or at least give us some numbers or a description of the engine you are talking about.

Most frank engines will ether have an H23/F23 bottom end and an F22 cylinder head. or F22 bottom end and a SOHC/DOHC VTEC cylinder head and intake.

Just so that you know the peak power band of a stock F22A6 is 4k and it is a noticeable increase in tq when you hit that rpm range. Almost feels like VTEC. if you have a header, intake and exhaust that accentuates this even more.

Welp....thats definately a non-vtec head. Dont know why he would say it was a frankentein. Clearly is not. You are hearing the iab's in the intake manifold.

Yup.. that is an F22A6 head/intake manifold. What does the engine block code say F22A6 or something else? The code is found stamped on the plate circled in red.

I'm guessing that based on the stock exhaust manifold and everything else being in the same condition it is an F22A block as well.

Did he tell you whether or not it had a chipped or tuned ECU?

Its definitely the original F22A6 block. he didnt say anything about the ECU but the guy that owned it before him was a big "ricer" per-say so its possible that he might have tampered with it. I dont know about all that though because it drives like a typical honda other than getting up to speed a little quicker than usual. oh yea btw i do have a different exhaust manifold but i dont wanna use it in the winter on a count of i live in michigan and the salt eats metal very quickly . also just curious is there any advantage to a Frankenstein engine or is that something to stay away from?

If they are done properly they have there advantages. IMO dropping in a stock F23 or H23 VTEC would be cheaper in the end. If you want more power than stock. You can simply add parts to the stock engine.

Only real benefit to hybrid F series is if you can get the used parts cheap and have them cleaned up and serviced for a reasonable price. Then again there are the guys who just slap them together and wonder why seals leak and the compression is low. If you are looking to go hybrid. testing the components and checking the health of them is a must.
