Should the seat belt lock up?
I know this sounds like a dumb question, but recently I purchased a 1990 Integra GS that needed some work. So I've finally got this thing running and have been driving it to work the past couple weeks, but the shoulder belt on both front seats does not lock (and the driver's shoulder belt does not retract).
Well since Acura warrantees their belts from mechanical defect for life and the vehicle has not been in a crash, I took it to the local Acura dealer for repair. After I convince the stealership that Acura does indeed warrantee the seat belts for life (it states it very clearly in the owners manual but they still tried to get me to pay for it), I bring the car in. The stealership looks at the belts and tells me they will fix them but that it will be 48 hours until they hear from Acura to confirm they can fix them at no cost to me. Fast forward 48 hours later and the service rep calls me and says they can fix it and they have the part so just bring it in. I ask them about if they have the parts to fix the passenger seat belt and they said the passenger belt was fine. I drive the vehicle up to the stealership and show them that while the passenger shoulder belt is buckled, I can jerk on it and it will not lock, while the passenger lap belt locks up fine. The service rep agrees that appears to not be working fine.
4 hours later the service rep calls me and says the part they have is not the right part and that they need to order it. They try to overnight it but he called me today to tell me the part did not arrive. I ask about the passenger belt and he said they tested the belt and that its fine. When they test drove it and hit the brakes the belt locked up fine. So I'm thinking, what if I don't hit the brakes? Guess I'm just dead.
Anyways, every car I've ever driven has seat belts that lock if you jerk on them or extract them too quickly the belt will lock. Can anyone confirm that the seat belt should lock if I pull on it real quick? I can't let me wife ride in this thing with any doubt in my mind that the belts are working properly.
Side note, I'm sick of this dealership and their bullcrap. You'd thing something like a lifetime warrantee for a seat belt would be straight forward and I wouldn't have to deal with them trying to rip me off.

Yes when I had my 3pt belts they locked up if you jerked them(94 CDM gsr). While I don't know if this is a wise idea I took seat belts from a junkyard car once and used them so I could pass safety/not get ticked for having 4pt cam-locks lol. I didn't appear to be to trashed so I deemed them "safe". But that was for the drive side only and if it's someone else's life then maybe i'd say don't.
call customer service and rat them out.
i'd ask for the regional service manager's number too.
