Cam gear timing went off! Valves bad?
I bought a 95 gsr last year to use as a daily. It was from a friend of mine. He said it was running low compression pistons etc whatever & that it used to be boosted.
Well he sold it to me with no timing belt cover for the top or bottom. Well was tightening up the bolt to the rear motor mount. Got the car started up, & the wind blew a rag I had on the fender between the cam gears. It was there for a second or two.
After the incident the car sputtered a bit like it wanted to shut off. So I turned it off. Now it won't start. It'll just rotate. Thinking cam gear timing went off. Did I wreck anything internally? Or can I just line up the cam gears & run it?

Bent the valves for sure, never saw one that didn't. Sorry, at least the head isn't hard to fix and you get to freshen it up a bit (VG seals etc) so it will preform top notch.
so i would have to remove the valve cover & find out? how hoard is it to replave the valves? never had a motor apart before as i dont have a garage. most i've done it motor swaps on old school supras etc.
Ive snapped a timing belt on my b20 vtec doing 60mph and didn't bend a single valve. If you caught it fast enough chances are you didn't damage anything, but sometimes its just luck. Set the timing back on the motor and do a compression test and leak down test and you'll know if somethings messed up.

Put your timming back on tdc and try again no use piling the head if there's no need for it.
Grab a helms manual or you can find a DIY thread on replacing timming belt.
I'm going to give it a try once I get my tools back from school & when its not as cold out. Never timed a car before so let's see if I can get **** to line up. Thanks!

The timing can be off pretty bad and the valves will still be ok. Get the timing set correctly being VERY careful not to make the problem worse, then do a compression test. If the compression test fails go from there. Also get a damn timing belt cover!
yup doesn't always bend them even at those speeds mind you I've never heard of some surviving when you're at least at 4K rev's. I had the timing off on my DX by 9 teeth once, limped it home and not one cylinder was under 190 psi max variance was 2-psi. I don't hear of it happening too much to be honest with out Honda's.
Update: Took the car to the shop, they did a compression test & said the compression was at 30 psi on all 4. Curious as to if the low compression pistons/rods will make those #'s? Ik a cylinder needs 90psi & up to fire up. Any ideas on what I should do? The car still didn't want to start. Just rotates. Do I need to rebuild the motor?
That's exactly what I plan on doing when I tow it home with my truck from the shop. I plan on doing a dry/wet compression test. Then if it seems to be above 90 psi, I'm going to try & put timing back on tdc & run it.
i agree especially on all 4 just set the timing and try and fire it up if you do get numbers like that it will deffinately be valves but if timing is off valves arent shutting so low compression if it has low comp pistons with good valve cut relief you may not have hurt it at all. mine jumped pretty much same thing happend the cams jumped one tooth on both just reset and all good
As has been mentioned...
1-Get timing belt cover(s), most likely valves are not bent, but you may not be so lucky next time.
2-Reset valve timing and see if engine starts, if it does, do a valve lash adjustment and a compression test.
I also agree that 30psi on all 4 cylinders is weird, or a shop trying to rip you off. 94
