Civic 91 high rpm after engine starts
Hello everybody:
I am new here, and really glad to find out something like this where I could possibly find solutions for my problems.
Problem 1:
Every time I start my engine(with one day interval), the rpm reaches at 2500. I have to hit the accelerator pedal as many as 20 times or more and then the rpm comes down to below 1000.
Plz suggest whats wrong.
Problem 2:
This is Civic 91, and plz tell me which transmission fluid to use in the gearbox that would not kill the tranny. Also, how to check the transmission fluid level.
I very much anticipate your support honda-tech.com
Thank you,
rajonno

Problem one isn't really a problem. Your car has what is called an idle air control valve (iacv) and possibly a fast idle thermo valve (fitv). Those two valves control how much air the engine sucks in at idle to help the engine get to operating temperature quicker. As long as your idle is around 750 rpm after the engine is warmed up you'll be fine.
As for problem two, does your car have an automatic or a manual transmission?

I'm not sure how honda's control closed loop, and considering it's older computing I'd say that the EGR would definitely be in relation to your first problem, as stated above me, those few items are notorious for the spaz idle, but if it were those it'd be a consistent issue not per start up.
#2, I was told by my local honda shop when attempting to buy manual trans fluid to just use 5-20 like the shop techs, not sure how accurate that is but my shops service manual (online) says 5-30 in lower temps, and 10-30 in higher temps. I'm running 10-30 and I can tell the difference from the previous lube, I would not recommend it!! Considering the fact it's constently below 32* where I am ATM I should run 5-30.
As for an auto trans, of course you'd run ATF

Thank you for your replies.
Problem 1 started few weeks back. I observed the condition variously. If I keep the engine running idle it stays on the high rpm until I hit(not just press) the accelerator paddle multiple times. Same condition persists if I drive the car on. In both cases after the engine runs for couple of mins, I have to hit the paddle multiple times then the rpm comes down.
plz note, this high rpm only happens when the car is idle for a day or two.
The car has manual transmission. Where I live it is min 20 degree Celsius. Should I use 10-30?
