How hard was YOUR swap?
just wondering where you got your engines, and what you guys used to make your swap on your CRX or HF work. and any problems on the way would be helpful too. thanks

Lol. My swap was pretty frusterating, I have some advice for anyone planning a swap.
Make sure you have a CLEAN garage to work in, and an ORGANIZED set of tools! Also, having only one car in the garage helps quite a bit also.
Learn from my mistakes - don't do a swap at the same time your brother is (same garage), and schedule some days off from work! (i'm doing 2 jobs, and tried to swap
)

Exactly. I felt so relieved once that thing started up!
Did I mention it took me 3 weeks to prepare the motor, and then swap it? Yeah, most of the time I couldn't even find the right sized socket cuz our garage was so full of junk!
= Me
But I could easily do a swap in 1 day if I had help.

Yeah Im with you there...My swap was done in the middle of november in WI, in a minutely heated garage. We were only working on the weekends sooo... weekend one..wrong clutch, weekend two 7 of 8 flywheel bolts, weekend 3 no help..but got it in, weekend 4...got it started.
The best was ...wouldnt start...would crank once..and then die. Just me an my fiance in the garage...i was running on empty, previous night (with torteX) was a 14 hr marathon, and I just felt beat up. She says 'Just try it one more time...for me'. The mighty B18b roared to life...I jumped up and down for about 5 minutes straight, then ran around outside. Later that night drove it home sans exhaust.
Yeah...it was a pain, but when im turning a wrench its not work...its....magic.

My first swap I did with my dad, and he is an organized person, he wanted to have every tool int he right spot. My next spot me and a freind did, and it was sloppy, we couldnt find **** ever, nothing. Then my next swap me and another guy did, and we stayed real organized. Key to easy swap is tools. Have everything nice and organzed before, and everything prepped, so when one motor comes out all you have to do is rewire and maybe put axles in. If you do that, it shoudl be simple.

My swap on a scale of 1-10 bout a 6 1/2 i did auto to manual in a 91 hatch. If i had the pedals it wouldve been done in three days but no pedals put it off for almost 3 weeks *fingers crossed* it should be runnin tomorrow. Organized tools help ALOT! Dads a body man and wont let the garage get messy

Or get a smaller alternator belt, pulling the alternator in closer to the motor.
Personally, I'm not happy unless I have grease under my fingernails.....lets just say my swap made me real happy! Seriously, there is nothing better then starting your car up and taking it for that first drive with an engine YOU installed yourself. Considering that I got parts from all over the world, I'm amazed it worked. For example, I got my ECU from Singapore! If I had it to do again, I would be a bit more organized. Oh well, you live and learn...
i swapped a b16 into a 91 crx. i'm really glad i did it. total cost of doing it right: $3000. it was my first swap. i'm 18 years old and didnt know **** about cars as a freshmen. i took some auto classes but i really learned when i got my car. after that all i did was read read read on the net about the swap. the best thing you can do is plan it out as well as possible. the actual swap took 3 days, working at night. everything went really smooth. i couldnt be happier with the performance i have now considering how much i spent. it also refreshed the milage of my car, which in my opinion raised the value of it. but most important of all, i learned my car inside and out and feel i gained a lot by doing it. not to mention the bragging rights with friends and family

Do yourself a favor and only have the sockets out that youre actually going to use(if youre having friends help) Otherwise they will make continued trips to the tool box and take every damn single socket out of the toolbox & then figure out its the wrong one.....
Sockets youll need are
6 point standard depth 10,12,14,17
12 Point standard depth 10,17
Deep/Impact 14,17,19,32
Wrenches 22mm

<-- That was me after swapping my engine two times. I always always always have problems getting the motor in the chassis. If I had a swear jar I would be a millionaire. Sailors got nothing on me when I swap motors.
But eventually I get it right and calm down. Then it takes me about 2 months to do something else to my car. A big vicious cycle.
1st swap was a d16a6 into my hf...never started because the motor was hit...im in the middle of my 2nd...its a b16 into my hf...still havnt gotten it started...so yah...its frustrating...i never been on that "1st test drive"

Like a couple of the guys said, do your reading & searching. Have a clear understanding of what u'r getting into. Have plenty of tools, PB spray(life saver), and extra money & time to go to the parts store for any needed parts(**** breaks).
My ZC swap took me four days, fri-sun. because fri/Sun i was rained out(i was on my pops backyard). Plus it was the first time for me and my pops first time with a Honda.
B16 are getting easier and cheaper to fit into CRX because there are more companies selling the products needed... I give it a couple of years and you'll see the whole swap for about 900$... easily!(of course, not counting mechanic work)

Ha. All of these answers are very true! I just got finished with my b16a into my 90 crx si.....and quite honestly it was very difficult but there were only a couple times where i was really upset....the rest of the time i was having a ton of fun. I would do it again! Im having a few problems with it now but nothing that cant be fixed with a little tinkering...The car started up and ran great the first time i cranked it over.....Just make sure you double check everything before you take it out on the road.
And i cant stress enough that you have to make sure everything you need is with you and always plan to spend more than you intended. Prepare for some heart ache and celebrate the accomplishments....Just keep the original goal in mind and keep faith....you will suffer, you will fail but ultimately you will triumph. And keep this in mind.....the b16 is ******* fast....you will love the power you now have. keep up the good work. ~Ryan~
And oh yeah.....the front crossmember is a real bitch....especially for header clearance so i would reccomend cutting a bit out of the crossmember where the manifold comes down....I sure did. And bash the **** out of the frame rail! i mean ALOT!

The first swap I helped with was putting a Mazda V6 into a Mercury Tracer. That took a few months. Then I swapped a D16A1 into an 85 CRX, converting from carbed to fuel injection at the same time. That one took me about 5 months, only because I was so damn frustrated with it I didn't even look at the thing for the middle 3 months. So it was really 2 months of actual work. Third swap was a ZC into the same CRX after I blew the D16A1, that took me a week of a couple hours a night. Fourth swap was what should have been a 1 day swap, a carbed 1500 87 CRX engine into a carbed 87 Civic HB (basically stock-stock swap, piece of cake, right?), and converting to manual from auto at the same time. It took me ten days of work, and that was ten DAYS of work. I took most of a week off my job, and a couple of weekends to get it done.
Like everyone said, organization is important. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. And having a welder handy is a good thing.
