So i have spent the last couple days researching different cam specs, from companies such as Skunk2, Brian Crower, Crower, JUN, Toda etc.. My question lies with the JUN cams. I know they have unsurpassed quality when it comes to there engine parts. but they have very similar lift to Skunk2 pro2's, just longer duration. So my question is are they really worth the extra $$? I am going to be doing a N/A build and shooting for 220+ whp 11.5:1 compression ratio as well(mahle gold series). Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated!

you don't need aftermarket cams to make 220whp.

 

Hence the 220+ whp.. i want atleast 220, and guys with cams are struggling to reach 220.. i have been researching this build for some time now, so i know what i need to reach my goals..

 

Unless there is some HP out there i have not found out how to get yet.. and i want to change the power band, hence the need for cams

 

stock h22....pretty abused at the track.... but well take care of.
rmf race style header, skunk2 IM.... can't remember what size tb, balance shaft delete
b16 trans 93octane




few months later, he came back, had the skunk2 IM ported & e85, changed vtec & timing around....



if your going to gamble on "if" jun h22 cams will be worth it go ahead.


But I think many will say with stock motor, good IM & header you can do +220
add pro1 to get into the +230
go pro2 to get +240
if your worried get a proven cnc/ported head if you want +250whp will still keeping the 90mm stroke.

I am also at 7200 feet.. so altitude is going to rob approximately 5% of the power. And thats on a B-series tranny, they are a little more efficent at putting the power down. And e85 wont be an option for me, the e85 around my area is garbage. Im not saying it isn't possible to reach 220 on stock cams, but at my elevation its not likely to reach that without cams etc.. i plan on a fully built port and polish head, .25mm over pistons and up the compression ratio a bit(again altitude will effect CR) 550cc injectors, euroR IM and 68mm throttle body. Then get a tune and see where im sitting. Just trying to decide on my cam selection weather JUN cams are worth the extra 500-600. Thanks for the info!

imho, can't go wrong with pro1/pro2, just make sure you or someone else checks clearances or things can go bad quick.


if fuel is one of your limits, then honestly aside from fancy headwork, you may need to resort to more displacement from the 95mm stroke crank, not really cheating but you gotta do what you gotta do brotha.

Everything will be done to a T, claying the pistons to check valve clearence etc. I have heard some horror story's about sk2 cams being weak but maybe they have fixed this issue since.. Back to the drawing bored.

 

Jun cams definitely not worth the extra money.
Try some cams from DDTECH. I will not support skunk2 anymore.

 

I have been hearing that a lot lately.. For what reason? I'm just trying to get the best for my money, and have heard of skunk2 cams breaking/cracking. So that will probably not be an option, I'll check out DDTECH

 

The JUN are a rare and expensive choice on cams, but a known performer. I have not heard of these horror stories on the H cams from Skunk2, and am happy with the set in my car, but I have only put ~6000 miles on them, and they were used, so I don't know the mileage before, or what oil/ valvetrain was used.

Where are you at that the elevation is consistent 7000 ft, and do you have a tuner at that elevation, or will it be tuned at a much lower elevation?

 

I am just north of Colorado Springs, in the mountains so elevation is anywhere from 6300-7500 feet. We have a tuner in Colorado Springs (roughly 6300 feet) so it won't be a huge difference

 

Ok, if you get tuned at Revolutions you should be in good shape then, their dyno is almost exactly 6000 ft if I remember right.

 

I am guessing different dyno's have way different readings. I made 157whp stock and 177whp after CAI with velocity stack, Iridium plugs, hytech replica and 2.5' header back no cat, Crome + P72 road and dyno tuned (M2A4 trans; both done on the same dyno 1month apart). There is no way that I will reach 220whp on my current dyno, might get close to 200whp with more boltons. I picked up a set of Juns purely because they provide a great powerband which suited the performance I wanted from the H22. Yet to get enough cash together to actually install them into a built engine...

 

yea not every h22 makes 200whp stock so assuming so is pretty naive. My first h22a made 173whp and i went 14.0 at 97mph. The number the dyno spits out doesnt mean anything to how "fast" the engine is. You find that out at the track. And also, generally, H2b setups make more power.

 

That was my plan, and I may have them custom fab a manifold for me as well

I've profiled a few camshafts for high altitude guys, they do NOT like BIG duration in those heights.. there's just not enough air, so a properly done camshaft will be important, Bigger IS NOT always better, and this is a great thing..

 

What would it run me for some custom ground? That's what I have been hearing from guys at work as well
