Default 97 civic steering problems

just a fair warning this will be fairly long. ive been trying to find/fix this problem with my car but im getting very frustrated

for over a month i had a grinding noise that seemed like a braking problem, but i have fairly new pads/rotors/ and calipers. checked them and the pads were wearing unevenly on the drivers side. i didnt have the cash to fix it so i didnt even check the passenger side.

went to fix the problem and they seemed to fix themselves. the pads are worn fiarly straight but the grinding noise still persisted. to explain the noise it wasnt a constant noise but it was in a pattern of 3 times every so often. engine speed didnt affect it but the slower you drove the more you could hear it.

well the grinding noise went away but now i still get the pulse of 3's and it pulls really hard to the passenger side. after driving 5-10 miles the steering wheel will be pulling so hard to the right its very hard to keep it on the road.

jacked it up and couildnt find anything wrong. then i drove it and let it start doing it again pulled in advance and jacked it up and the steering wheel was clunking so wiggled the wheels and suspension. i grabbed the tie rods on the drivers side and could wiggle them and they clunked when you did so.

jacked it up again when i got home. since its so cold outside lately i only work 15-20 mins at a time. but i went back out and the drivers side tie rods were no longer loose? put it all back together just to see and everything was tight.

my cv joints are crap i know that but i dont think theyve been anypart of the problem. my question is could it be in the rack and pinion somehow? but the wheel isnt hard to turn or anything and works fine after the car has cooled down. also the steering wheel no longer clunks like it was

any help would be greatly appreciated

the cv joints are going bad, and my alignment isnt the best but ive put thousands of miles on it so far and i dont think it has anything to do with those

Lower ball joint, passenger side.

Check out Tegger's site (accessible in the H-T FAQs threads) and read
about passenger side lower ball joint failure. If that description matches
your experience, then evaluate your lower ball joint.

When it fails, it will fail catastrophically and there will be massive
collateral damage.

sorry i forgot to mention that all the balljoints and tie rod ends are new i changed them a few months ago.

the thing that has me confused is that it dosent do it all the time it slowly starts to get worse but in terms of keeping it on the road after it starts messing up it quickly gets very much worse and u have to pull over n let it all cool down then start all over again.

Have you tried adjusting the rack? It's normal maintenance to have to adjust the steering rack in these 90's Hondas. You'll need a special tool from Honda

i havent tried that but i really dont think its the rack cause steering is all good untill i drive 5miles or so and it only pulls to the right side real bad. lately with these subtemperatures it actually hasnt done it but my cv's have been making alot of noise since it got so cold. idk everytime i go to fix something it seems to fix itself and something else goes wrong.

i was actually starting to wonder if it could be the differential going bad

well the clunking noise is gone and somehow the car fixed itself cause its no longer pulling off the road or anything. starting to think this things haunted. now the tranny wont keep oil and i dont think its leaking anywhere. cv joints have been making more noise than usual so im gunna replace those tomorrow.
