My input shaft bearing is done for on the Civic. Seeing how I gave to pull it all apart to get the bearing, I was wondering some things.

Bearing doing so is there a better trans ( ITR,CTR ) I would wanna swap out to?
Is there better gear ratio options I can just swap out mine for?
Just rebuild mine, but drop in a LSD?
Any other options?

Its a daily driver, no boost, but at some point, it will be boosted. Doesn't see much highway driving, just city traffic.

If you're sticking to the NA B16 for now, the other transmissions (with their longer gearing/ final drive) are going to make your Si feel sluggish. Personally, I would rebuild what you have an save for a good LSD. That will make the biggest difference, especially once its boosted.

 

Maybe even a different final drive depending on what the car is used for.

FD will make alot of difference in performance

If you already have it open, look at your syncs and springs, gears, etc.
Fix it all at the same time.
Who wants to open it up later down the road when it could be done right the first time.

 

USDM ITR and JDM 96-97 transmissions have the same gear ratios as the S4C B16 trans. The R models do have better synchros and a stronger diff.

I'd highly recommend a 4.78 final drive. Made a huge ddifference with my ITR. Probably the single most beneficial mod, especially considering cost.

Don't waste your time with LS or GSR 5th gear garbage. You'll hardly notice a MPG drop at anything below 85ish MPH.

 

Edit...if it's going to be boosted later...skip my advice about the final drive change. Infact, maybe a GSR trans would fit your goals better....depending on power and torque levels.

The GSR trans kinda sucks for NA B16/B18C apps. But its good for turbo builds or B18B/B20 apps.

 

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll stick with the stock Si tranny for now. I'm not sure how soon it'll get boosted ( every time I save up, something else comes up where the cash is needed ). It's pretty much used as a DD to a from work dealing with traffic, so I'm mostly in 2nd and 3rd so I don't want to lose that quick acceleration to change lanes. I'll definitely look into replacing syncros and other bearings while I'm in there. Any recommendations on an LSD?

The snychros are the same as an ITR, but the ITR has a stronger final drive and a factory helical LSD.

Synchrotech carbon synchros are a nice upgrade, as far as the LSD, MFactory. Check the sleeves, hubs and engagement teeth while you're in there, clean everything really well, lube everything when you put it together and it should work well. Torco MTF for fluid.

Edit, Quaife make a good LSD, but MFactory is cheaper and IIRC have a better warranty and arguably a better product.

The B16A2 transmission is the same as the ITR trans except for the diff and ring gear bolt pattern. The synchros are the same.

For the LSD, go with the MFactory helical LSD. I would also recommend the MFactory 4.923 FD. After upgrading to it, you'll probably change your mind about boost. MFactory has a 30 day guarantee for the FD. If you want more info or want to order let me know.
