Help guys Prelude in danger. transmission leak
So my friend and I were replacing his distributor and valve cover gasket on his 1992 Prelude Si with an automatic transmission and I got to tell you it runs like a champ, the engine (H23A1) hasn't lost a step and the transmission still shifts like butter. When we were done replacing the dizzy around 7 PM we went to take it for a drive around the block, btw the engine had a nasty oil leak from the dizzy and valve cover gasket. So as we pulled in to his driveway we saw a puddle of something, a good chunk of it. We thought it was oil from the dizzy change, I also dropped some soda so I thought it was just soda mixed with oil. It didn't smell like oil at the time I was thinking it was ATF but I didn't say anything. Btw the color was not bright red it was more of a brownish color, plus being dark out it looked like oil. We went to back to my house 1 block away and I stayed outside to close the gates I saw drips of something as he backed up, got some and smelled it, nope that's definitely not oil. We got to my house, a 30 sec drive and we checked the ATF, bone dry no fluid on the stick, at all. I noticed it was dripping from the left side of the transmission by where the passenger side wheel is. It lost a lot of ATF and all while we were changing a dizzy? We are gonna jack it up tomorrow, but does anyone know what could this be? I hope it's just a seal and an easy fix. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance guys
Sounds like you may have blown out an axle seal. However losing all your transmission fluid doesn't normally spell doom. It needs the fluid to shift and whatnot but you might be fine.
This.
If the car was jacked up or the car was parked on an incline nose up, the differential seals will be the lowest point on the transmission case and it will pour out fluid if the seals are bad. Hopefully it is the right side seal that is leaking and not the left side, that can be a PITA to replace the seal.
