when ever i start it up my check engine light is off,when i press the pedal hard the light comes on. whenever i shut the car off to pull the code there is none. its the same process every time i start it up and whatever it is is making my engine performance and gas mileage very poor. it also sputters when the pedal is pressed to a certain point.

how can i look into this?

•OBD 1 plug, have to cross the connector pins.

 

when the light comes on pull the car over and jumper the service connector....you can do this with the car on it doesn't need to be turned off

there are howto vids on youtube on how to do properly read the codes

 

i have read that if you pull the codes while it is running it can fry the ecu.

 

Then why does the Helms state to jump the service connector when you're trying to set the ignition timing ? How are you supposed to jumper the service connector to set your ignition timing if you're going to fry the ecu doing so ?
