Can used valves be used in different cylinder head?
Hey guys I have a question my friend just totaled his car and he is parting out his built cylinder head I am interested in his valves he has ferrea comp plus, but need to know if they will be ok in my gsr cylinder head? Is there anything I should do before I have them installed?
I would get them inspected by a machine shop to ensure they are straight and all that. Then as mentioned get the seats cut to match. Might at well replace seals/guides at the same time.
Yes I know out of him and other reputable head porters he was the only one to answer email no one else wanted to give me the time of the day, Great customer service is the number one selling point in my opinion

I can check the valves for straightness and reface them if needed. I really like putting new stuff in heads, but if we can save you some $ and they are ok, I'll let you know.
Luke do you mind if I email you photos? The ones that were bent were replaced with new ones, and the others look excellent but would like your input
Here are photos of valves http://s297.photobucket.com/user/sms...bile%20Uploads
Here is the problem....you buy them for some discounted rate and send them in...then I reface them. You pay labor for a guy cleaning that old stuff up, then standing in front of a valve grinder at $7 a valve. You just spent as much as you would have on new valves and you have old stuff in your new expensive head. Valves are consumables. I always put new stuff in my own engines. I won't be able to tell if they can be used until I have them in my hand.
4Piston, other than being bent what else would cause a valve to fail your inspection? I ask because I too am getting a set of used valves for pennies on the dollar and would like to avoid catastrophic failure.

That sounds like some good bullsh*t doesn't it LOL. Its true though. Valves, springs, and any other valvetrain components are consumables and if they need replaced, replace them. These projects are big investments, so some things aren't worth skipping. If I didn't respond shoot me another. I try to respond to all of them, but there are days where there aren't enough hours in the day for me to get to all of them. I'm also terrible matching up screen names with real names, with emails, with facebook, etc. Old age kicking in! I can do numbers....can not do names
Thanks for responding 4Piston. I had no idea road salts were harmful to valves. Then again I live in south Texas where it gets cold for about two weeks, never dropping below freezing at the.
You say valve train components are consumables.. How long would skunk valves, and supertech springs and Ti retainers last in a daily abused street driven engine? Should I have a set time or mileage interval and pull a random spring to do a pressure test? Should I just pull the head every so often to inspect the valves and guides too?
As you've mentioned these are big investments, and if there is a way for me to prevent total catastrophe I would really like to know about it.
