Hello, I have a 1990 Honda CRX with an auto d15b2. The oil filter that is supposed to fit on such an engine (for fram) is supposed to be a PH3593A. I have tried two of these and the threads get very tight after about 1/2 of travel.

The oil filter I removed is a blue 'genuine Honda' oil filter stamped with the code "S12661".I removed the original by hand, and it came of nicely. The threads of both components are in good shape.

I have pix of the original oil filter, the engine code, and oil filter mounting point, if you wish to see.

So does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? This seems very strange to me...

 

it's because it's a piece of **** fram, get a WIX or nappa gold, throw the fram in the trash, they are known for bad threads

 

the normal orange frams are awful filters, fram ultras are good though...anyway compare the threads on the two filters and you should answer your own question.

frams have been known for bad threads for years, at least this one was too tight, and didnt just blow off going down the road

 

i never had any issus with fram filter but if you do want a real good filter, its the OEM honda the best i know.

have you tried to put oil on the filter's thread...?

 

Im pretty sure fram makes the OEM Honda filters...

 

Filtech and Toyo Roki make the majority if the Honda OEM filters. Some are made by Fram.

dont do it!! dont put fram on your engine!! just get a wix, I wouldnt put a fram on a lawnmower

Honda trusts FRAM to make their OE filters. That's about all I can say because all you are doing is spreading slander for no reason.

slander? I've been working on engines for over 20 years, I would never put a fram on anything I work on, I've cut plenty of them open and I know how they are put together. I had to put one on my built 81 civic engine back in the day, only because I hit something and put a hole in the filter, the filter guts came apart, got into my engine,destroyed the pump, and the engine. Slander? I personally know many people who have had the cheap threads fail and the filter blow off the engine, as well as them leaking. I'm talking from personal experience. Ask any guy who has put a lot of time and money in their engine, and ask what filter they put on their engine, it wont be fram, I had one split between the base of the filter and the can on a riding lawnmower, a lawnmower! think I'm going to put one on my car?

 

I will partially agree. I have had 2 bad experiences with FRAMs base line orange filters. I will not use them on anything. However, their FRAM Ultra filters are quite good. I'm not trying to tell you what to do or anything, but actually run a FRAM Ultra and then cut it open. I think you'll be surprised at the quality. I did the experiment quite some time back and they are right in line with most other "better" quality filters. Given the choice, I will still take a Mobil1 or K&N filter but it is still a good option if you buy it as a bundle from most parts stores.

Nothing but WIX and Mobil1 filters for me.

 

Honda filters are made by either Filtech or Honeywell which owns Fram. Honda filters are made to higher specifications than Fram as well. Also OP if the fram doesn't fit you may need the Honda because of shear size difference. Years back when I installed an oil pressure guage the sender was above the filter and required the Honda.

 

the threads on the sender are 1/8 bspt, vs 1/8 npt for the rest of the planet, there are no Honda threads, you can get a 1/8 bspt male to 1/8 female NPT adapter, and use any standard gauge or line. you can get one of those adapters from MSC for about 5 bucks, there are no special threads on the Honda filter, Frams often have crappy threads is probably the issue

used to be, the filters are now made by another company and aren't the quality they used to be. The STP filters used to be identical inside, but cheaper in price, made by the same company. even the stamping numbers on the bosch and STP bases were identical

 

For the record:

ACDelco 'PF1127' worked, it was not as nice of a fit as the Honda OEM, but it worked.
