Has anyone attempted this? Is removing the engine, or dropping the subframe necessary?

I've removed all the pan bolts, unbolted pass side engine mount, raised the engine as much as possible, and I'm still not even close to getting this thing out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

Dumbest design ever! CR-V's with the K24 engine........... Engine needs to come out to replace the oil pan. I have no idea why they design things like that. Of course, this isn't the first vehicle I've seen that needed to have the engine taken out to swap the oil pan.

The B20 was a much easier setup. You only needed to remove an exhaust pipe (and the torque converter cover for A/T) if I recall correctly.

 

It was a little frustrating, but I got away with unbolting the pass engine mount, raising the engine as far as possible, and then loosening the 8 17mm bolts that hold the subframe in place. Barely enough room to remove/install. Thanks for the response, there is very little info I could find on the newer crvs.

 

Rather then replace the pan, I would just get a time-sert

 

I would have chosen that option if the drain plug was stripped. The problem, however, was that the pan was broken from coming into contact with a concrete lane divider.

Edit: and that time-sert kit is more expensive than the aftermarket pan I got. I was actually impressed with the quality, it was a Dorman unit.

 

I'm about to attempt an oil pan replacement in.my 2004 and it seems to be the same predicament.How did you raise the engine without pushing on the oil pan?

 

You can use a chain hoist and lift from the top. That's usually the "proper" way.

I've also seen people use a floor jack on the edge or corner of the oil pan with a length of 2x4 between them to distribute the load. Oil pans are pretty strong surprisingly. Just watch it carefully to make sure you don't crush the pan.
