Default temp gauge messing with my emotions?!

ok, so i have a 1994 sedan ex. stock z6. 208xxx miles runs amazing. i just put brand new radiator and hoses in it maybe 3 weeks ago. i was warming it up outside of work for about 15 min. get in and the temp gauge is about 85% up. pop the hood and feel the hoses. bottom hose is ice cold. top one barely warm. same with radiator. no fans blowing. once i drive it for maybe 5-10 min with it pegged on the red, the needle will drop to normal temp faster than you can blink. so i figured since everything feels cold still and it says its overheating ill change the thermostat. did that and same issue. its only on warm up will it do this. once the needle drops it stays at the operating temp. bled the system for bubbles and all that also. so i hooked a buddies s300 up to it. while the needle was pegged on red the engine temp was only at 145 degrees. stayed on red as the motor slowly warmed up (as its winter and 10 degrees outside) once the engine got to about 185-190 degrees the needle dropped to normal and the temp stayed the same on hondata. so i know the motor itself is not getting hot.

i guess after all that i was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if it could be the cluster itself or maybe the sensor for the gauge. any info is appreciated. **** talking also encouraged since this is honda-tech and it will happen.

thank you all and happy holidays!

Try resetting ECU. Could be temp switch or http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl791h.htm

Did you replace the thermo sensor? That could be old and flaky and acting strangely. It screws into the thermostat cover and has wires plugged into the back of it and often time skipped when changing the thermostat.

Just clued in... you got engine temp from hondata which I think would be coming from that thermo sensor..... Retract my question.....

Looking over the the FSM, I didn't realize the temp guage sensor is seperate than the thermo switch.

Maybe your tempurature guage sensor has gone wonky.

I'm just glad that the car is not actually over heating. I've owned countless hondas and never had a temp gauge **** the bed on me. wondered how common it is.
none the less ill replace both thermo sensor and sending sensor and report back.

I believe the thermo switch is to switch on the rad fan, so if yer fans kick in, it's working.

The factory trained Honda mechanic I know always replaces it when he does the thermostat though thus why I suggested it.

when the hoses are cold but the gauge says its over heating (hondata shows engine temp is at 135-150 degrees at this point) no fans kick on. once it runs or i drive it for 10 or so min the gauge rapidly drops to normal. if i let it idle the fans will kick on when needed as everything is normal. I'm gonna replace the 1 wire sensor for the gauge on the head. guessing its only that.
