Default Convert F23 head to non Vtec?

Hello H-T I am preparing an F23 swap and was wondering if either I could directly swap in an F22a6 non Vtec cam or install the F22a non Vtec valve train?

I really don't like tuning Vtec and would rather eliminate it while keeping the better (stock) flowing F23 head.
Thanks

No, they are completely different.

If you are stuck on the F23 without VTEC, your best bet would be to find yourself an 98/02 Non VTEC SOHC F23A5 cylinder head.

However, if you weigh the options and take the lesser of your evils there is an easy fix. Ether tune the very easily tunable VTEC F23 head or sacrifice the extra 20cfm and go for a 90-93 PT3 (F22A1-6) cylinder head.

The F23A5 head swap would be the most simple way to eliminate VTEC from the picture. However, i would speculate power potential may suffer. maybe a port job and valve angle job would help... not sure.

you wouldn't expect the F22A1-6 heads to loose a flow-bench-race to the F23A1 looking at the ports... do you have some data or source you can cite? I'm interested in reading if you do.

Red-Rocket: the F22A1-6 is an option though unlike the F23A5 it's not so simple. the F23 manifolds and distributor are not compatible with the F22A head. it has it's advantages, but weigh it carefully against the disadvantages before deciding.

Yes the F23 outflows the F22A by 5-20 CFM between 0.01" and 0.04" of lift on the intake. And up to 35cfm on the exhaust side. The F22A (PT3) head has low exhaust flow. However with a port job and larger valves the F22A can easily out flow the F23. That's where you start to see the difference. They can both flow north of 300 if you want to pay the money.... it's just cheaper to start with the PT3. Not to mention no VTEC and therefore a much simpler valve train.

This was a chart posted on CB7tuner a few years back by another member.

You can't compare the F23 vs the F22A in the ported category of this chart. The F23 is CNC ported with +1mm oversize valves, while the F22 is probably a poorly done clean up port job without even a valve job. As I have seen the F22A wake up with just a simple valve job. This one somehow looses even more flow in the low lift area after it has been "budget ported".

Can f23 vtech head fit directly on a f22 non vtech block already in the car?
Other word turn non to vtech.

Depens on what F22 you are referring to.
F22B2 Yes
F22A1-6 Yes but you will also need an F23 exhaust manifold and intake manifold swap.

and for what it's worth, the acronym is VTEC. It stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. It is not a company that makes phones or child's toys.

thanks for the quick replies guys you answered my questions throughly, I'm trying to keep the F23 head because in stock form it flows better than the F22 and this is a budget build more than anything.

looks like I'm on the hunt for an F23A5 next time I hit the junkyard

I love real facts and figures! thanks Ghost.
