Default question for those that have removed steering racks

I'm pretty sure that the mounting bushings for my steering rack are bad. I checked the bigger ones that have the opening in them(part number 1 in illustrations) and they seem fine so it appears to be the other ones part number 7.

I'm curious if I can disconnect the rack from the steering column and remove the bolts that hold the other bushings and bracket and lower the rack down just enough to replace the ones that appear to be bad or do I need to actually remove the exhaust pipe for it to come down to be able to remove them ?

The reason I ask is because my exhaust is welded through from the b pipe to the cat and I would need to have a flange welded on to be able to completely drop it down.

I'm actually kinda wondering now if it's the collar in part number 8 that's bad.

I got this clunking and all of my suspension is new. The only thing it can really be is the part number 7 bushings and/or that collar at part number 8.

I'm just not sure if it will drop down enough to get those bushings to clear to be able to pop them out and replace them. Thanks in advance.

Been so long since Ive had my cb7 or since Ive even worked on one. Buuuuuut typically you can remove the mounting bolts and you will have lots or maneuverability from the rack with out disconnecting anything else. I seem to remember the rack on that car is a bitch to do though.....

FWIW if the mounting bushings are bad and are allowing the rack to shift, the steering wheel will change positions everytime you turn one way or the other. One way to check the bushings is to simply have some turn the wheel from lock to lock while the car is in the air and you are underneath it staring at the rack. Movement will be very noticeable. There should be zero movement from the rack itself.
